CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team closed out its series vs. BYU on Saturday with a 4-2 loss at UC Baseball Stadium.

The Bearcats (12-11, 1-5 Big 12) led for much of the game after redshirt senior Kerrington Cross led off the bottom of the first with a home run, but the Cougars (13-9, 3-3 Big 12) put up four runs in the top of the sixth to take a lead they would not relinquish. UC got one of those runs back in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't make any further progress in the eighth and ninth innings.

Following the cancelation of Sunday's game vs. Butler, the Bearcats will now turn their attention to No. 16 Louisville. Cincinnati hosts the Cardinals on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.

Cross went 2-for-4 at the plate and was 7-for-12 on the weekend, bringing his season batting average to .413. Senior Adam Mrakitsch made the start and tossed 5.2 innings, his longest outing of the season, while striking out six. Senior Rodney Shultz threw 3.1 innings out of the bullpen, striking out two.

// HOW IT HAPPENED
A strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play ended the top of the first inning in style for UC, and Kerrington Cross led off the bottom of the first with a home run to give his squad a 1-0 lead.

Adam Mrakitsch was outstanding through the first five innings of his outing, striking out six and not allowing a runner into scoring position. That changed in the top of the sixth, as a walk and a base hit gave BYU runners at the corners with two outs, and a single into right field tied the game. Mrakitsch left the game, but the Cougars continued to pile on with an RBI double and a two-run single giving them a 4-1 lead.

Cincinnati made it 4-2 in the seventh after Donovan Ford scored on a BYU error. Cross skied one into shallow right field and the ball clanged off the glove of the second baseman, allowing Ford to score from second and Cross to reach third. The next seven UC hitters were retired by BYU's bullpen, however, ending the game with a 4-2 final score.
