CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team continued its impressive homestand with a 10-1 win against Canisius.
The Bearcats put up double-digit runs for the second time in the last three games, and sophomore right-hander Nathan Taylor was impressive once again on the mound. He earned the win with seven innings of one-run ball, striking out nine while allowing just three hits. Taylor tied his career-high for longest outing for the second straight game and posted at least nine K's for the third straight start. The Amelia, Ohio native has been outstanding this season, having posted 35 strikeouts in 24.0 innings pitched and a sparkling 1.50 ERA.
The bats continued to rake as well, as UC has now reached double figures in hits in each of the last four games. Redshirt freshman Charlie Niehaus and redshirt senior Dawson Hokuf both had three hits apiece, while redshirt senior Kerrington Cross, junior Landyn Vidourek, sophomore Jack Natili, and junior Cal Sefcik all logged two hits apiece.
Niehaus was a home run shy of the cycle and now has six extra-base hits in his last four games. Vidourek continued his recent tear at the plate, hitting a long home run in the first inning to spark the offense. Cross also walked twice and stole two bases.
Finishing the game on the mound was senior Rodney Shultz, who was electric in the eighth and ninth. He struck out the six in the eighth and sent down the Golden Griffins in order in the ninth to end the game.
Cincinnati will go for the series sweep on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Nathan Taylor tossed an easy 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, then the Bearcats rewarded him with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Two runs scored on a mammoth, two-run home run from Landyn Vidourek that hit Fifth Third Arena, and the third run scored on a fielder's choice.
Canisius responded with a run in the top of the second when leadoff hitter Trent Rumley opened the frame with a homer to left field.
Jack Natili and Cal Sefcik led off the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles, then both scored on Lauden Brooks' grounder to third that was misplayed by the Canisius fielder. That error put the Bearcats up 5-1. Charlie Niehaus ripped a double into the corner in the bottom of the fifth that scored a run and increased the lead to 6-1.
A two-run base hit off the bat of Cal Sefcik made it 8-1 in the bottom of the sixth, then Tommy O'Connor singled in two more runs in the seventh to make it 10-1.
While the hitters were piling it on at the plate, Taylor continued to dominate on the mound. After allowing the home run, he retired 10 straight batters, six of which went down on strikes. He allowed baserunners in the fifth and sixth, but induced inning-ending double plays to get out of trouble, and though Canisius loaded the bases in the seventh he escaped unscathed.
Rodney Shultz entered the game in the eighth and picked up right where Taylor left off, striking out the side in the eighth before a 1-2-3 ninth inning capped the win.
