CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team is set to face a couple local foes this week in the annual Joe Nuxhall Classic.
The event will be held at Prasco Park in Mason and will feature the Bearcats as well as Miami (Ohio), Wright State, and Xavier. UC and Wright State will play at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, following the conclusion of the Miami vs. Xavier game that afternoon. The losers of both games will face off at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday and the winners will face off on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. All four games will be streamed live on Chatterbox.
Admission, parking, and concessions are all free for fans at Prasco Park.
The event is named after Joe Nuxhall, who still holds the record for youngest player to ever appear in a Major League game (15 years, 316 days) which he accomplished on June 10, 1944. Following his playing career, Nuxhall was a legendary radio broadcaster for the Cincinnati Reds from 1967-2004.
Cincinnati and Wright State have not faced off since the 2023 Nuxhall Classic, a game that the Raiders won 7-6. Wright State leads the all-time series 47-41-1.
The Bearcats enter play on Tuesday having won eight of their last 10 games. Over that timeframe they're averaging just over seven runs per game and getting on base at a .400 clip. Kerrington Cross has been incredible during this 10-game straight as well, hitting .500 and reaching base 35 times (17 hits, 13 walks, five HBP). His OBP over the last 10 games is .660.
Cincinnati hosts Arizona State for three games this weekend. First pitch on Friday is set for 6:00 p.m., game two on Saturday will begin at 3:00 p.m., and the finale on Sunday will start at 1:00 p.m.
// LAST TIME OUT
Cincinnati claimed its second straight Big 12 series over the weekend, taking two out of three at Texas Tech.
Game one was a 12-inning marathon that UC won, 8-7. A ninth-inning rally by the Bearcats tied the game at 7-7, then Jack Natili's RBI single in the 12th sealed the deal. The two teams played a doubleheader on Sunday, with Cincinnati winning the first game 8-1 before dropping the second game 12-8.
The top performance of the weekend came from Kellen O'Connor, who threw a complete game in the game two victory. It was the first nine-inning complete game by a Big 12 pitcher this season and the first by a UC pitcher since 2022.
