OXFORD, Ohio – A six-run seventh inning highlighted by a grand slam from redshirt senior Kerrington Cross pushed the University of Cincinnati baseball team to a 6-4 win at Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday.
The Bearcats (17-11) have now won four straight against the RedHawks (15-13) and five straight games overall.
For the first six innings, Miami's pitching staff stifled the Cincinnati bats and held them scoreless. The offense woke up in the top of the seventh though, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring six runs to grab the lead. An eighth-inning home run and a ninth inning rally from Miami nearly spoiled the Bearcats' big comeback, but junior Christian Mitchelle recorded the final out of the game to seal the win.
For Cross, it was his sixth home run of the year and the continuation of a torrid stretch at the plate. Over his last eight games, he is hitting .571 with four home runs, 11 RBI, 12 combined walks and HBP, 12 runs scored, and just one strikeout. Cross owns a ridiculous 1.790 OPS during that stretch.
Sophomore Cal Sefcik came up huge as well, going 2-for-4 and producing a two-run single in the seventh inning that proved to be valuable.
Eight different pitchers saw time on the mound on Tuesday, with Mitchelle earning his second save of the season and sophomore Carson Marsh receiving the win.
Following Tuesday's game, Cincinnati will head to Lubbock, Texas for a three-game series at Texas Tech.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Miami struck first, scoring the first run of the game in the bottom of the third. A one-out base hit was followed by a hit by pitch to put runners on first and second, then a single into left field scored the runner from second to make it 1-0. An RBI single in the bottom of the fourth increased the RedHawks' lead to 2-0.
The big inning for Cincinnati came in the top of the seventh. After managing just three hits through the first six innings, UC batted around and scored six runs in the seventh to grab the lead. Christian Mitchelle walked to lead off the inning, then Tommy O'Connor and Kory Klingenbeck walked to load the bases. Kerrington Cross then stepped to the plate and lifted a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field to give the Bearcats a 4-2 lead.
The inning wasn't over for Cincinnati, as Landyn Vidourek and Lauden Brooks reached on back-to-back singles. Cal Sefcik then ripped a double down the line in left field to bring in a couple runs and increase the lead to 6-2.
A two-run home run from Miami's David Novak in the bottom of the eighth trimmed UC's lead to two, putting the score at 6-4.
The RedHawks put the pressure on the Bearcats' bullpen in the ninth. Three walks loaded the bases for Miami's cleanup hitter, putting the winning run on first base. Mitchelle, who started the game at third base, moved to the pitcher's mound and induced a ground ball that was fielded cleanly by Lauden Brooks at second base for the final out..
