Ottensmeyer Leads Bearcats to First Big 12 Win

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Graduate student Lauren Ottensmeyer matched a career-high seven goals as the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team secured its first program Big 12 win after defeating San Diego State, 19-15, on Saturday afternoon.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Graduate student Lauren Ottensmeyer matched a career-high seven goals as the University of Cincinnati lacrosse team secured its first program Big 12 win after defeating San Diego State, 19-15, on Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats (8-7, 1-2) grabbed the win over the Aztecs after a 60-minute back-and-forth battle. Alongside Ottensmeyer's strong offensive performance, junior Camryn Callaghan notched five goals and freshman Paige Selhorn grabbed a pair.

Cincinnati's offensive was full throttle against San Diego State, notching a season-high of 19 total goals.

Cincinnati struck early, with Ottensmeyer scoring two unassisted goals in the first five minutes, giving the Bearcats a 2-1 edge. San Diego State responded with three straight goals, reclaiming the lead at 4-3 to close the first quarter.

Despite trailing 6-3 early in the second, the Bearcats roared back with seven unanswered goals to gain control. Ottensmeyer was able to score twice more, while freshman Alyse Keels, graduate student Julie Rose, Callaghan and Selhorn all found the back of the net. Selhorn buried two free-position shots, and Callaghan scored to give Cincinnati a 10–6 lead before the break.

The Aztecs came out heavy in the third, narrowing the deficit to just one (10–9).

Callaghan and Ottensmeyer each added another goal, and junior Lexie Wolfe's setup for Callaghan on a man-up opportunity gave the Bearcats a 14–12 edge heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Wolfe and Ottensmeyer both scored again, and Paige Counts added a critical goal to widen the gap. Callaghan's fifth and final goal came on a clutch free-position shot with 18 seconds left to seal the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Darko matched a career-high 12 big saves.

Cincinnati remains on the road as they face off against No. 4 Florida on Saturday, April 19. Opening draw is set for 12 p.m.
