CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati lacrosse team fought hard but suffered a heartbreaking 11-10 overtime loss to UC Davis on Friday evening inside Nippert Stadium.
The Bearcats fall to 7-7 (0-2) on the season after beginning Big 12 conference play with two close losses.
Cincinnati struck first, with graduate student Lauren Ottensmeyer finding the net early to give UC an early lead. However, UC Davis's Grace Gebhardt quickly answered.
Second quarter goals from graduate student Julie Rose and sophomore Hailey Joy Simpson allowed the Bearcats to close in on the Aggies. By halftime, UCD held a slim 8-5 lead.
Coming out of the break, the Bearcats roared back with three unanswered goals. Ottensmeyer, junior Camryn Callaghan, and sophomore Paige Counts each found the net, shifting the momentum and bringing the score to 8-8 heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the Bearcats take the lead when sophomore Ally Keith converted a clutch free position shot, making it 9-8. However, the Aggies were able to equalize before Counts put UC ahead once more at 10-9.
Just when victory seemed within reach, UC Davis's Lauren Picardi tied it up in the final minutes, forcing sudden-death overtime.
In the opening seconds of OT, Gebhardt delivered the dagger—an unassisted goal that sealed Cincinnati's heartbreaking defeat.
Cincinnati continues conference play with a trip to San Diego to faze the Aztecs on Saturday, April 12. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m. ET.
