CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's tennis team improved to 9-10 on the season after taking down Colorado 5-1, at the Western Athletic Club on Friday afternoon.
The Bearcats secured the doubles point after a series of tightly contested matches across all three courts. Graduate student Zeynep Erman and senior Callie Flanagan triumphed 6-3 on court three, boosting their season doubles record to 9-3. The decisive point came down to court three, where junior Rozalia Gruszczynska and sophomore Gabrielle Guenther sealed the victory with a 6-4 win.
In singles competition, Cincinnati claimed victory in four matchups to clinch the overall match, with one contest remaining unfinished.
Junior Rozalia Gruszczynska secured a three-set victory on court two, winning 6-2, 1-6, 6-3, while senior Callie Flanagan battled through a tough match on court six, to win in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-3. She improves to 5-3 in singles play this season.
"I played a really tough opponent, and she was very smart," Flanagan said after the match. "I knew that I needed to play my game and not get roped into her strategies. I feel like I have played like that all year, but today I felt like I executed, and everyone executed across the board."
Zeynep Erman claimed a hard-fought victory over Mila Stanojevic, winning 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in a thrilling three-set battle. With the win, Erman improves to 9-5 in singles play this season.
Sophomore Gabrielle Guenther sealed the win for the Bearcats with a thrilling three-set victory over Ema Bubalo, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4). After trailing 4-1 in the final set, Guenther made a remarkable comeback to win in a tiebreak. With the victory, she improved to 9-9 in singles play this season.
"From the very beginning it was a roller coaster of a match. We got the job done in doubles, but my performance wasn't as well as it could have been," said Guenther after her victory. "Going into singles, I didn't play my best, but I knew I was better than that girl and I had it in me to have a comeback. I have been through this before this season, and I have learned from those mistakes. I learned that I need to just play my game and step into the court and play tough."
