MASON, Ohio – The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped its first game in the Joe Nuxhall Classic on Tuesday night, falling to Wright State by a score of 10-3.
UC (19-13) will now face Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Prasco Park. The two teams have already played twice this season, with the Bearcats winning both matchups.
Cincinnati grabbed an early lead on Tuesday, but Wright State was able to score runs in bunches and silenced the UC bats to grab control of the game.
Sophomore Jack Natili had the most success at the plate for Cincinnati, reaching base four times with a hit and three walks. He also drove in one of the three UC runs on Tuesday, with seniors Tommy O'Connor and Donovan Ford also logging RBIs.
Five different pitchers saw time on the mound on Tuesday including redshirt junior Keegan Allen, who made his Bearcats debut. He entered the game in the top of the ninth with two outs and retired the lone hitter he faced.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
The first run of the game scored on an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the second that gave UC a 1-0 lead. Jack Natili, Christian Mitchelle, and Cal Sefcik drew three consecutive walks to open the inning, and Tommy O'Connor's ground ball to second allowed Natili to score easily. An inning later Natili made it 2-0 with an RBI double off the right field wall.
Wright State grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs to go up 3-2. A UC error set up the inning for the Raiders, then a two-run single tied the game and another RBI single gave them the lead.
The Bearcats weren't down long, as Donovan Ford's two-out single into center field scored Charlie Niehaus in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-3.
Wright State responded with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to double up Cincinnati and put the score at 6-3. Three more runs crossed the plate in the top of the eighth and another scored in the top of the ninth to give the Raiders a 10-3 lead, which would hold as the final.
