LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team completed its series sweep at No. 25 Kansas on Sunday with a 13-4 victory at Hoglund Park.
Cincinnati (27-20, 13-11 Big 12) has now won six games against nationally ranked opponents this season, the most since at least 2000, and the series sweep vs. the No. 25-ranked Jayhawks (36-13, 15-9 Big 12) is UC's first sweep of a ranked opponent since at least 2000 as well.
The win followed a similar script to the previous two games, as Cincinnati's offense flipped a switch over the final half of the game to build a large lead. The score was tied at 2-2 heading into the top of the sixth, then the Bearcats scored four in the sixth, four in the seventh, one in the eighth, and two more in the ninth to cap the weekend sweep on an authoritative note.
Cincinnati's offense was firing on all cylinders in Lawrence, combining for 38 runs and a .686 slugging percentage across the three games. UC slugged 11 home runs, with redshirt senior Kerrington Cross and junior Landyn Vidourek both supplying three.
The 38 combined runs over the course of the series are the most by Cincinnati in a three-game series sweep since scoring 40 combined runs in a sweep vs. Georgetown in 2006.
Vidourek homered in the finale on Sunday, a highlight of his 3-for-5 day, and freshman Derrick Pitts homered too. Freshman and Kansas native Quinton Coats walked three times and scored twice, and redshirt senior Kory Klingenbeck drove in two on a ninth-inning double.
Redshirt senior Kellen O'Connor made the start and turned in a strong performance, striking out five across six innings to earn the win.
Cincinnati will now turn its attention to a non-conference tilt at Oral Roberts on Tuesday before visiting TCU next weekend.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Landyn Vidourek opened the game with a bang, hitting a leadoff home run in the top of the first to give Cincinnati the lead. The Bearcats ended up sending eight runners to the plate in the first, and Lauden Brooks' sacrifice fly brought in another run to make it 2-0 before Kansas had a chance to bat.
It didn't take long for KU to respond, however, as Brady Ballinger's solo homer in the bottom of the first made it a 2-1 game. The Jayhawks then scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.
As they did the previous two games, the Bearcats cranked up the offense in the later innings. They broke the 2-2 tie with a four-run sixth inning to grab a 6-2 lead. Dawson Hokuf's RBI double brought in the go-ahead run, then back-to-back singles from Vidourek and Kerrington Cross brought in the rest. Vidourek's base hit scored two runs giving him three RBI on the day.
Four more UC runs came in to score in the top of the seventh to make it 10-2. Tommy O'Connor's sacrifice fly preceded a three-run home run off the bat of Derrick Pitts, the second homer of the year for the freshman.
The floodgates remained open in the eighth and ninth innings, as Cincinnati scored three more before the game was over. A squeeze bunt from Lauden Brooks and a two-run double in the ninth by Kory Klingenbeck gave the Bearcats a 13-2 advantage.
Kansas scored two in the bottom of the ninth, but the runs proved inconsequential to the final outcome.
