CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati athletics department mourns the loss of Bill Mulvihill, who passed on Tuesday, July 15. He helped start UCATS in 1979 and worked in the department for 28 years. He was 78.

Among Mulvihill’s many accomplishments with UC Athletics were leading the capital campaigns for Varsity Village and improvements to Nippert Stadium and creating the George Smith Society for current and endowed scholarships. Following his time in athletics, he held leadership positions with the UC Foundation, including as campaign director for the Proudly Cincinnati Campaign, the university’s first billion-dollar campaign. He was also executive director of the UC Bicentennial Commission in the Office of the President.

Mulvihill received the University of Cincinnati President’s Award for Excellence in 2016 and founded The Mulvihill Advisory Group, which offered counsel in areas of advancement, vision planning, board development and leadership, and mentoring advancement staff.

In addition to his work in fundraising, he boasted leadership experience working with and on a variety of boards, notably on the Board of Trustees and the Volunteer National Chair of the Board of Trustees of a voluntary health organization, the Arthritis Foundation. He was on the board of the New York-based Lupus Research Alliance and a past member of NIH’s National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Council (NIAMS). Mulvihill was also a member of the Board of Trustees for St. Xavier High School.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from UC’s Lindner College of Business in 1970, followed by his master’s at Ohio University in 1973. Mulvihill is survived by his wife, Beth (UC CECH ‘72), son, Bill Jr. (UC Bus ‘01 and ‘02), and daughter-in-law Sarah as well as his three grandchildren: Caroline, Lincoln and Alexandra.
