CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati football program closed out fall camp on Friday at Nippert Stadium with an intrasquad scrimmage, battling for nearly two hours before all was said and done.

Friday’s scrimmage makes 13 days until the season opener vs. Nebraska at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Head Coach Scott Satterfield viewed the scrimmage with a critical eye, given the season opener is just around the corner.

“We still have work to do,” Satterfield said. “We’ll get back at it next week, and of course after that it’s game week. Our emphasis next week will be to make sure we’re game ready. We need to keep getting better, that’s the mindset.”

The highlight of Friday’s scrimmage was the battle in the air, as the wide receivers and tight ends battled the secondary all day long. Sophomore Gavin Grover caught a pair of touchdowns, and junior Caleb Goodie made a nice catch on a score as well. Senior Jeff Caldwell’s sideline snag was one of the highlights of the day as well.

“The first week-and-a-half of practice the wide receivers got the best of the secondary,” Satterfield said. “Then the defensive backs started getting used to the speed of the game and settled it. That competition will certainly help them as we move forward throughout the season. We’re going to play some outstanding receivers this year. When you go ‘good on good’ like we’ve been doing, you’re helping yourself out.”

Redshirt senior Logan Wilson had a couple pass breakups to help lead the secondary. One of the most experienced players on Cincinnati’s roster, Wilson is making the move from safety to cornerback this season.

A seventh-year player in his second season at UC, Wilson leads a talented and deep secondary that could see marked improvement in 2025. He has also spent more time in a fall camp setting than just about anyone on the roster, and real snaps in a real game can’t come soon enough.

“When you’re playing situational football out here you know it’s getting closer to game day,” Wilson said. “It’s game time, so we need to make sure we’re poised and ready to go.”

The Bearcats face Nebraska on Thursday, Aug. 28 at 9:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
