WEST HARRISON, Ind. – Cincinnati football wrapped up its week at Higher Ground Conference and Retreat Center on Saturday with a spirited, 23-period, two-hour practice in the hills of Indiana before heading back to UC’s Clifton campus for the remainder of fall training camp.

It ended in the best way possible, as kicker Stephen Rusnak drilled a 50-yard field goal to send everyone home. The Charlotte transfer was perfect on 11 attempts last year for the 49ers, including five from 40-plus yards.

“Stephen knocked down another one,” head coach Scott Satterfield said. “That’s awesome to see. We try to create some new scenarios for him, because now all eyes are on him. He knocked it down, and he’s done that so far every time.”

Quarterback Brendan Sorsby continues to emerge as a leader along with likely three-year team captains Gavin Gerhardt and Dontay “The Godfather” Corleone.

Transfer wide receivers Cyrus Allen (Texas A&M) and Jeff Caldwell (Lindenwood) had excellent weeks, as well. The wide receiver corps clicked on all fronts Thursday, and after the defense got some revenge Friday, got the upper hand again Saturday morning. Colorado State transfer speedster Caleb Goodie also added a 60-yard touchdown catch down the sideline.

Defensive line depth showed through, while plenty of defensive backs proved they will play meaningful snaps. Satterfield noted defensive linemen CJ McCray and Marquaze Parker as two that really help the three-man front.

Of course, Corleone, the two-time All-American, will set the tone for the defense.

“Sometimes, when you see Dontay make a play like he did in the backfield, he reminds you real quick how good he is,” Satterfield said. “He’s very disruptive, and it’s really a lot of times he may be getting blocked, but he’s going to be in the backfield on top of the quarterback or running back, and he starts to feel that pressure.”
