CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati football team practiced indoors at the Sheakley Indoor Practice Facility on Tuesday, grinding through 22 periods as it continues its preparations for the upcoming season.

After spending the last week at Higher Ground, the Bearcats returned to campus on Sunday and practiced in Nippert Stadium on Monday. Tuesday’s practice was the first of fall camp that took place in the new building.

“Everything is so convenient here,” cornerback Logan Wilson said. “We can eat upstairs, the weight room is right here off the field. There’s space to relax in the locker room and in the player lounge. Everything is right here, so everybody can be here communicating and connecting with each other.”

The convenience of having everything in the same spot, as well as state-of-the-art nutrition, strength training, and recovery tools at their fingertips, will no doubt produce even stronger Bearcats.

Three of UC’s most impressive physical talents were recently recognized by The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman on his annual “Freaks List”. Dontay Corleone (No. 14), wide receiver Jeff Caldwell (No. 29), and linebacker Jake Golday (No. 48). Cincinnati, Alabama, Iowa, and Penn State were the only teams with at least three honorees ranked inside the Top 50.

An honorable mention All-Big 12 honoree a season ago, Golday’s 4.24 shuttle time and 1.54 10-yard shuttle were among the numbers Feldman cited regarding the linebacker’s spot on the list. Golday was PFF’s second-highest-graded linebacker in the Big 12 last season.

“I wasn’t expecting to be on the list, I just found out what it was a few weeks ago,” Golday said. “To see my name there listed with some of those other players is such an honor. It was cool to see two other Bearcats on the list as well. I think we have even more guys who could be deserving as well.”

Director of Football Sports Performance Niko Palazeti is the man in charge of molding the Bearcats into physical specimens who can withstand the toll college football takes on the body. Golday has noticed improvements in the weight room since transferring to Cincinnati prior to the 2024 season, and he credits Palazeti with that transformation.

“You can’t say enough about the work that Niko has done,” Golday said. “He brings the energy every day and makes you want to run through a brick wall. Bringing that kind of energy every day, combined with the routines he puts together for us, that’s a recipe for success.”

This is the third time Corleone has earned a spot on the list and he is the highest-ranked Big 12 player. Feldman praised “The Godfather” for his combination of strength and agility, noting that Corleone bench presses 485 pounds and squats 615 pounds while still posting a 1.71 10-yard split time, which would have ranked among the defensive tackle leaders at this year’s NFL Combine.

Caldwell, who will be making his Bearcats’ debut this fall after transferring from Lindenwood, is a big target (6-4, 208) and former FCS All-American. His 11-9 broad jump figure would have tied for the farthest jump any wide receiver ever logged at the NFL Combine, and he boasts a 36.5 vertical jump as well.
