UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team fell to Penn State, 82-77, on Friday night inside Rec Hall in University Park, Pa.
In another back-and-forth battle, the Nittany Lions used a late 13-2 run to pull away for the win. The game featured 10 lead changes and seven ties.
Four Bearcats scored in double figures, led by freshman forward Kylie Torrence, who posted a career-high 18 points on 9-of-20 shooting. She also added six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block.
Fellow freshman Caliyah DeVillasee finished with 15 points along with five rebounds and four assists. Mya Perry added 15 points, and Reagan Jackson chipped in 13.
Alliance Ndiba paced Cincinnati on the glass with 10 rebounds, while Ramiyah Byrd grabbed a career-high seven.
Cincinnati shot 38% from the field and 33% (7-21) from three-point range. Penn State countered with a 49% mark from the floor and nine triples of its own.
Penn State opened the game on a 12-4 run before Cincinnati answered with a 12-0 spurt, highlighted by the first two three-pointers of Kali Barrett’s career. A pair of buckets from Torrence helped the Bearcats take a 27-25 lead after the first quarter.
DeVillasee scored the Bearcats’ first seven points of the second quarter, and Perry followed with back-to-back buckets to reclaim the lead. Cincinnati held Penn State scoreless over the final 2:15 of the half to head into the locker room with a slim 41-40 advantage.
After an 8-2 run by Penn State to open the second half, Cincinnati responded with six straight points, including four from Torrence. The Bearcats were perfect at the free throw line in the quarter, going 6-for-6, but the Nittany Lions knocked down four three-pointers to take a 64-57 lead.
The Bearcats rattled off nine straight points to begin the fourth quarter, taking a 66-64 lead with eight minutes left. Back-to-back buckets from the freshmen duo of Torrence and DeVillasee extended the advantage to four. Penn State then used a 13-2 run over nearly four minutes to pull away with the game, 82-77.
