CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team fell in overtime to Miami (OH), 75-71, on Wednesday morning inside Fifth Third Arena.
Cincinnati (4-5) led by as many as 13 before Miami (OH) closed regulation on an 11-2 run to force overtime. The Bearcats created opportunities at the free throw line in the extra period but converted just 7-of-15 at the stripe.
Freshman Caliyah DeVillasee led UC with a season-high 23 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. It marked her third 20-point outing of the season.
Mya Perry added 20 points, four rebounds and three steals, extending her double-figure scoring streak to nine games and marking her fourth 20-point performance of the year.
Freshman Kylie Torrence posted her first career double-double with 12 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. She tied her career high with four blocks on the defensive end.
The Bearcats struggled offensively, shooting 37% from the field and 21% from 3-point range. UC finished just 12-of-21 from the charity stripe (.571).
Cincinnati used a 7-0 run over two minutes to lead by five in the first quarter (9-4). The spurt was highlighted by back-to-back buckets from Perry. Miami (OH) fought back to bring the score to 9-8 at the end of the first with the Bearcats still leading.
Miami (OH) took a four-point advantage with 3:36 left in the second (16-12). Torrence made back-to-back buckets, while Joya Crawford tied the game after a steal and score. The RedHawks beat the buzzer to head into the locker room up by two (22-20).
The Bearcats found themselves down by seven early in the third quarter (27-20). A big and-one basket from DeVillasee stopped the run. The Bearcats then scored six straight to even the score at 29-all with 4:52 to go. In total, Cincinnati went on a 15-0 run over four minutes to own a 10-point lead with one quarter remaining (45-35).
Miami (OH) closed regulation on an 11-2 run to force overtime. DeVillasee put UC back in front with a driving layup at 2.8 seconds, but the RedHawks answered with a buzzer-beating layup to extend the game.
A 6-0 run put Miami (OH) back in front to open overtime. Cincinnati pulled within two on two occasions but went just 7-of-15 at the free throw line in the period. Miami (OH) countered with a 7-of-9 effort to hold on for the 75-71 win.
