MANHATTAN, Kan. – The University of Cincinnati women’s basketball team could not overcome a decisive third quarter by Kansas State, falling 79-52 on New Year’s Eve at Bramlage Coliseum.
The game was tied at halftime before Kansas State opened the second half on a 15-0 run and outscored the Bearcats by 22 in the third quarter.
Senior Mya Perry extended her double-figure scoring streak to 14 games, leading Cincinnati with 14 points and three made three-pointers.
Freshman Kylie Torrence returned to the lineup and posted a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with seven points and three steals. It marked her third double-digit rebounding performance of the season.
Freshman Dee Alexander recorded the first double-figure scoring effort of her career in just her second game back. She finished with 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting, four rebounds and one block.
Cincinnati struggled to handle Kansas State’s full-court press, committing 30 turnovers. The Bearcats were without point guard Caliyah DeVillasee for the fourth straight game, while freshman Joya Crawford did not return for the second half after exiting with an injury.
The Bearcats shot 31% from the field and made just three three-pointers (.167). Kansas State countered with a 43% clip and 14 three-pointers (.412).
Ndiba scored the opening basket before finding Alexander inside to tie the game at 4-4. The teams traded three-pointers leading into the first-quarter media timeout. Cincinnati then closed the period on a 9-0 run to take a 16-10 lead, capped by an and-one from Perry. The Bearcats held Kansas State to 23.5% shooting in the opening quarter.
Perry connected on another three to extend the lead to 20-14 with 7:01 remaining in the second quarter. Baskets from Alexander and Thomas pushed Cincinnati’s advantage to seven, 26-19, before Kansas State answered with a 9-2 run to tie the game at 28 at halftime. Thomas led the Bearcats at the break with seven points and six rebounds.
