CINCINNATI — Sophomore Paige Selhorn recorded a school-record seven assists and three goals for 10 points, leading the Cincinnati lacrosse team to a dominant 14-6 victory over Central Michigan on Friday afternoon at Nippert Stadium.
Cincinnati held a firm advantage for the full 60 minutes. After a tight first period that ended 1-0, the Bearcats broke the game open in the second quarter with a 5-1 run fueled by three Lexie Wolfe goals, pushing their lead to 8-2 — an advantage they never relinquished.
Wolfe delivered an impressive all-around performance, tying her career-high with four goals while also collecting four ground balls and causing four turnovers. Draw specialist Morgan Handzel continued to dominate the circle, claiming a game-high 13 draw controls. Cincinnati outshot Central Michigan 27-15 and caused 20 turnovers.
The Bearcats improved to 3-2 with the win, while Central Michigan fell to 0-4.
The first period was a defensive battle before Wolfe broke the ice at the 8:24 mark, finishing a Selhorn pass for the only score of the quarter. The floodgates opened in the second, with Selhorn igniting the run with a sharp shot of her own, followed shortly by a Lilly Stelzer goal. UC then rattled off four straight in the final two minutes to take an 8-2 lead into halftime.
Junior Paige Counts opened the third quarter scoring with her eighth goal of the season, and junior Amadi Higgins found the back of the net for the first time as a Bearcat at the 6:17 mark to extend the lead to 10-4.
Cincinnati put the finishing touches on the win with three consecutive fourth-quarter goals, highlighted by Krista Harnischfeger's first career goal off Selhorn's record-breaking seventh assist. Sophomore Chloe Paige capped the afternoon with her first collegiate goal.
