MILWAUKEE — The Cincinnati lacrosse team dropped its first road contest of the season Sunday afternoon, falling 17-10 to Marquette at Valley Fields.
The Bearcats jumped out to a strong start, holding a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, a dominant second quarter by Marquette shifted the momentum for good. The Golden Eagles held Cincinnati scoreless in the frame while rattling off seven unanswered goals to take a 9-4 lead into halftime. Marquette maintained control the rest of the way to secure the seven-goal victory.
Cincinnati was led by sophomore Paige Selhorn, who finished with five goals and two assists, including four goals in the fourth quarter. Marquette’s offense was paced by Hanna Bodner and Tess Osburn, who each tallied four goals.
The Golden Eagles controlled the stat sheet, outshooting the Bearcats 28-16 in shots on goal and forcing 23 turnovers, 15 of which were caused.
After conceding the game’s opening goal, Cincinnati responded quickly. Junior Paige Counts evened the score at 1-1 before Selhorn tied it at 2-2 at the 5:10 mark, sparking a 3-0 UC run. Counts added her second goal of the contest to give the Bearcats a 4-2 edge heading into the second quarter.
Marquette’s seven-goal second period flipped the game. The Golden Eagles turned a two-goal deficit into a five-goal halftime advantage and carried that momentum into the third.
Although freshman Payton Kozina found the back of the net in the third quarter, MU outscored Cincinnati 6-1 in the period to build a 15-5 lead entering the fourth.
Selhorn’s four-goal burst in the final frame trimmed the margin, but Marquette’s lead proved insurmountable as it closed out the 17-10 decision.
