CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader vs. Austin Peay, dropping game one by a score of 7-1 before winning game two, 3-0.
The shutout victory in game two handed the Bearcats the series, their second series win of the year. Following the series win, Cincinnati’s record now stands at 8-4.
After a lopsided game one evened the series, Cincinnati bounced back in game two and shut out the Governors, allowing just five hits. It’s the second shutout of the year for UC after its 8-0 win at No. 9 Auburn on Feb. 17. The speed with which Cincinnati has recorded its first two shutouts of the year is unprecedented; it’s the first time in program history that UC has two shutouts in February.
In total this weekend, Cincinnati pitchers posted a 1.93 combined ERA while striking out 33 and walking just six.
Redshirt senior Adam Brouwer and junior Dominic Mauro combined to blank the Govs, earning Brouwer his first win as a Bearcat and Mauro his first save. Brouwer started the game and went 5.2 innings, striking out four and allowing just four hits and one walk. Mauro finished the game, throwing the last 3.1 frames while striking out five and allowing just one total baserunner.
All three runs in game two came off the bat of sophomore Jackson Smith, who clubbed a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the fifth.
Game one was all Governors, as they out-hit UC 14-2. They did all of their damage in the middle innings, scoring two in the fourth, four in the fifth, and another in the sixth.
Senior Logan Knight made the start for UC, striking out five across 4.1 innings pitched. He was one of five pitchers who saw time on the mound for the Bearcats with redshirt junior Brenden Garula, senior Dillon Schueler, and sophomores Brendin Oliver and Charlie Dieruf IV all making appearances. For Dieruf, it was his first game as a Bearcat since joining the program.
Next up for Cincinnati is a home game this upcoming Tuesday, March 3 vs. Western Kentucky. A four-game home series vs. UC San Diego follows.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 2)
- Defense ruled the start of game two, as Conlan Daniel wowed the crowd with an unbelievable leaping catch in center field in the top of the first.

After Daniel reached on an infield single to load the bases, Jackson Smith brought everyone home with a double deep into the gap in left-center field to put the score at 3-0.

- Mauro continued to dominate, retiring the final six hitters he faced to complete the shutout.
