CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team trailed Evansville 11-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but came all the way back to win 13-11 on Tuesday at UC Baseball Stadium.
The victory extends the Bearcats’ winning streak to seven, and they have now won 11 of their last 12 contests. Overall, UC’s record stands at 14-4.
Evansville built its lead with a three-run second, three-run fifth, and then a five-run sixth. Trailing by seven entering the bottom of the seventh, Cincinnati began mounting its comeback. Sophomore Jackson Smith hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to trim the deficit to four, then UC scored six in the eighth to retake the lead. Junior Cal Sefcik’s RBI single got the inning started, then freshman Jackson Reardon drove in two on a double to right-center to put the score at 11-10.
With two runners on base, freshman Enzo Infelise crushed an 0-2 offering way out to left field to emphatically put the Bearcats back on top, 13-11. Redshirt senior Joel Pineiro retired the Purple Aces in order in the ninth to seal the win.
It was a coming out party of sorts for Infelise, who hit the first two home runs of his college career and went 3-for-4. He entered the game as a pinch hitter in the fourth inning, when he hit his first home run, and of course had the game-winner in the eighth.
Reardon was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base, and Cal Sefcik had two hits as well.
Six pitchers saw time on the mound, with sophomore Adam Buczkowski earning the win. He struck out two over 1.1 scoreless frames, his first win of the year.
