OREM, Utah – The University of Cincinnati baseball team won 11-1 at Utah Valley on Monday night, the fourth time this year it has run-ruled an opponent.
After scoring three in the top of the eighth to go up 11-1 and shutting out the Wolverines in the bottom of the eighth, the game ended due to UC’s 10-run lead. Cincinnati took advantage of three UVU errors, scoring four total runs on the three miscues.
The Bearcats improved to 16-6 overall following the win.
The biggest swing of the game was a grand slam off the bat of redshirt freshman Ryan Tyranski. His seventh-inning grand slam was the third by a Bearcat this season, as sophomores Quinton Coats and Jackson Smith have the other two. Smith reached base three times on Monday, gathering two walks and a single, and his on-base percentage stands at .586.
Sophomore Derrick Pitts and junior Jack Natili both had two hits apiece, with both of Natili’s hits being two-baggers. Sophomore Conlan Daniel scored three times, more than any Bearcat in the game.
Five pitchers saw action, and sophomore Adam Buczkowski earned the win with 1.1 scoreless frames, during which he logged three strikeouts. Freshman Chad Brown threw the final 2.2 innings and had a season-best six punchouts.
Cincinnati and Utah Valley will play again on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cincinnati scored the first run in the game in the top of the first. Jackson Smith walked to leadoff the game, stole second, advanced to third on a flyout, and scored on a wild pitch.
- UVU tied the game in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly, but it could have been worse. The first three hitters of the inning reached to load the bases, but UC allowed just the one run.
- Cincinnati loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth, and Quinton Coats’ ground ball to the third baseman resulted in an errant throw home that allowed two runs to score. Enzo Infelise then drove in another run to increase the lead to 4-1.
- Ryan Tyranski hit a grand slam deep to center field in the seventh inning, breaking the game open and making it 8-1.
- Utah Valley committed another critical error in the top of the eighth on a throw home, allowing two UC runs to score.
- Derrick Pitts’ single to center field in the eighth scored Conlan Daniel and gave the Bearcats and 11-1 advantage.
