OREM, Utah – The University of Cincinnati baseball team wrapped up its road trip out west with a 6-3 win at Utah Valley on Tuesday.

The win improved UC to 17-6 on the year.

Cincinnati trailed for much of the game, totaling just one run on two hits through six innings. The bats woke up in the seventh, however, as a couple extra-base hits brought in four runs and gave UC its first lead of the day. Sophomore Quinton Coats homered in the top of the eighth to add to the lead, putting the finishing touch on the 6-3 victory.

For Coats, it was his 15th home run of the season which put him atop the Division I home run leaderboard. He was tied with Georgia’s Daniel Jackson entering Tuesday’s game. His 15 home runs already are tied for eighth-most in a season in program history and are more than any player on the team had last season.

Also homering was redshirt freshman Ryan Tyranski, who hit his second home run in as many days. A couple Bearcats had multi-hit days in freshman Enzo Infelise and sophomore Derrick Pitts. Pitts, Infelise, Coats, and Tyranski all reached base three times in the game.

Cincinnati stole seven bases, with freshman Jackson Reardon and senior Christian Mitchelle both steal two.

Junior Carson Marsh earned the win, improving to 4-1 on the year, thanks to his scoreless outing of 1.2 innings. Junior Dominic Mauro earned his third save of the year, striking out two over the final two frames. Mauro’s season ERA dropped to 1.08.

Cincinnati returns home this weekend to host Utah, the first Big 12 home series of the year. Friday’s game will begin at 6:00 p.m., Saturday’s game is set for a 3:00 p.m. start, and the finale on Sunday will start at 1:00 p.m.,

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Utah Valley opened the scoring, plating its first run on a wild pitch in the second inning.
  • Enzo Infelise tied the game at 1-1 in the Bearcats’ next trip to the plate in the top of the third. He drilled the first pitch he saw through the left side of the infield, bringing home Derrick Pitts.
  • UVU regained the lead in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1.
  • Neither side could muster much offense in the middle innings, as both teams combined for just one hit in innings four, five, and six.
  • Cincinnati woke up in the top of the seventh though, scoring four runs to grab a 5-2 advantage. Jack Natili’s two-run double turned the one-run deficit into a one-run lead, then Ryan Tyranski homered to right-center field to bring in two runs.
  • The Wolverines got one of those runs back in the bottom of the seventh on Hunter Katschke’s solo homer.
  • Quinton Coats hit a two-out solo shot in the eighth to make it 6-3.
  • Dominic Mauro entered the game in the bottom of the eighth and got the final six outs, retiring all six hitters he faced.
