This marks the third straight year that the Bearcats and Jayhawks will meet during a weekend series as conference foes, and last year’s series in Lawrence was a memorable one. Cincinnati took all three games against Kansas, ranked No. 25 in the nation at the time. UC leads the all-time series with an 8-1 record, the lone blemish coming in 2024.
This weekend’s series will feature a matchup between two of the best first basemen in the country. Cincinnati’s Quinton Coats leads the nation with 19 home runs and was recently placed at No. 3 on D1Baseball’s Top 50 First Basemen rankings. He also leads the nation in total bases (109) and ranks second in slugging percentage (.956) and third in RBI (46). KU’s Brady Ballinger was named to the Golden Spikes Award preseason watch list and earned several preseason All-America honors. Last year, Ballinger was an All-American and Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist.
A win in Friday’s game would put Cincinnati’s record at 20-8, which would be the fastest the program has ever reached the 20-win mark. The previous best start came during the 2000 season when the Bearcats won 20 of their first 29 games.
A high-powered offense and a deep, talented pitching staff have propelled UC to one of the best starts in program history. The Bearcats have pounded out 294 hits thus far, ranking fourth nationally, and their 44 home runs are 17th in the country. They also rank among the Top 20 in runs scored (224, 20th), and stolen bases (63, 18th). UC’s pitchers rank second in the Big 12 in strikeouts (255), rank second in K/BB ratio (2.66) and are third in ERA (4.52).
