CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati baseball team's stay in the top-25 came to an end this weekend, but a new endeavor awaits with Wright State on Tuesday night to conclude the homestand.
Right-handed pitcher Dillon Schueler will make his sixth start, all of which have come in 2 2/3 innings or less. He boasts a 2.84 ERA in his first year at UC.
Highlights from the weekend included Nate Taylor turning in his second-consecutive 7-inning gem, this time striking out nine (including the side in his final frame), as the Bearcats blanked Kansas, 5-0. It also included five double plays to tie the school record, with two of those coming from Derrick Pitts on fly-outs to right field and coincidentally against the same runner each time.
Quinton Coats was oh-so-close to his 20th home run Sunday with a double off the wall. He still maintains a comfortable lead nationally, with four others at 16. Jack Natili also homered for the eighth time, which is second on the squad.
Connor Blue got the spot start on Sunday, his fourth of the season. Mid-game heroics came from Logan Knight, who in his second-career relief appearance after 35 starts between North Dakota State and UC, allowed only one run over four scoreless innings. KU's nine-run ninth was the difference in the rubber game.
Conlan Daniel will go up against his former team. He started 33 games as a true freshman last year, hitting .314 with six homers, 18 RBI and 14 stolen bases. He also started in center field for all four of WSU's NCAA Regional games, including a round-tripper against No. 1 Vanderbilt.
UC was 10-2 at home coming into the KU series, and it was only the third home series loss of the Jordan Bischel era.
The Bearcats' 316 hits rank sixth nationally and second in the Big 12 to Texas Tech. Even with only two steals on the weekend (both Friday), UC leads the league with 67.
