CINCINNATI — University of Cincinnati lacrosse players Paige Selhorn, Morgan Handzel, Ava Laruffa, Kyva Holloway and Emma Mielke earned postseason Big 12 Conference honors, the league announced Wednesday.
Selhorn was a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 Team. Handzel (unanimous), Holloway and Mielke were named to the All-Newcomer Team, while Laruffa was named Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
A native of Westbury, New York, Selhorn established herself as one of the nation’s top offensive threats. She finished the regular season ranked eighth nationally in points (90), the second-most in program history. She also ranked 15th in assists (43) and 36th in goals (47). Within the Big 12, Selhorn led the conference in points per game (5.3), ranked second in assists per game (2.5) and fourth in goals per game (2.9).
Selhorn recorded a school-record seven assists and added three goals for 10 points in a 14-6 win over Central Michigan on Feb. 20. In just her second season, she has totaled 155 career points, the fifth-most in program history.
Led by Handzel, Cincinnati dominated the draw this season. She recorded 150 draw controls, averaging 8.8 per game, which ranked 13th nationally and second in the Big 12. Handzel set a program record with 24 draw controls against Eastern Michigan, tying the NCAA single-game record. The performance surpassed her previous program record of 16, set two days earlier in a win over Kent State on March 6.
A native of Woodstock, Georgia, Handzel broke the program’s single-season record of 115 draw controls, finishing with 150.
Laruffa, a health sciences major on a pre-med track, holds a 4.0 GPA and is pursuing a minor in health sciences and chemistry. The defender started all 17 games and recorded 23 ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Holloway, a freshman, appeared in 16 games with 13 starts. She totaled 14 ground balls and nine caused turnovers.
Mielke, a graduate student goalkeeper, recorded five wins — tied for the 10th-most in a single season in program history — and posted a .457 save percentage, the fourth-best mark in program history, with 74 saves.
This milestone marks 11 consecutive years of postseason conference honors for athletes under Head Coach Gina Thomas.
