CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati lacrosse team dropped its game against Arizona State 17-10 on Saturday afternoon at Nippert Stadium, falling to 8-6 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play. The Sun Devils improved to 6-7, 1-1 in conference play with the win.
The game was tied 4-all after the first quarter, but Arizona State seized control with a 7-1 run that stretched into the third quarter, building an 11-5 lead that proved insurmountable. Cincinnati rallied with four fourth-quarter goals, but couldn't close the gap.
Senior Lexie Wolfe led the Bearcats with four goals — tying a career high — and added an assist. Teagan Ng paced Arizona State with five goals. The Sun Devils outshot Cincinnati 33-21 and won the draw control battle 19-11.
Cincinnati came out fast, with Wolfe and junior Hailey Joy Simpson finding the net within the first two minutes to put the Bearcats up 2-0. A goal from sophomore Alyse Keels pushed the lead to 3-1, before Arizona State answered with three straight to take its first lead, 4-3, with 3:08 left in the first. Wolfe responded to level it at 4-all heading into the second.
The Sun Devils took command from there, outscoring Cincinnati 4-1 in the second quarter to lead 8-5 at halftime, then netting three straight to open the third and extend the advantage to 11-5. Wolfe's third goal of the game snapped the run and trimmed the deficit to 11-6, but the damage was largely done.
In the fourth, back-to-back goals from Wolfe and freshman Amanda Sweeney pulled Cincinnati within four at 12-8 with 10:30 remaining. Arizona State answered with four consecutive goals to push the lead to 16-8 with 5:24 left, ending the chance of a comeback.
