TicketsCINCINNATI – Cincinnati football head coach Scott Satterfield announced on Thursday that Mark Speir has returned to his staff. The former head coach at Western Carolina has more than 30 years of experience in coaching and support staff roles. He will serve as Satterfield’s assistant head coach.
Speir was UC football’s chief of staff during the 2023 season after working at Louisville in the same role under Satterfield in 2022. He worked at Appalachian State in off-field roles in 2024 and 2025, and also served as an analyst there in 2021.
As a member of Jerry Moore’s staff at App State from 2003 to 2011, Speir helped the Mountaineers win three straight FCS national championships and six conference titles in nine seasons. That success led to him being hired as the head coach at Western Carolina, where he spent 10 years leading the Catamounts. He was named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National FCS Coach of the Year award in 2014.
In his new role, Speir will work closely with Satterfield to set the direction of the Bearcats’ program.
“I’m excited to welcome Mark Speir back to our Cincinnati football team,” Satterfield said. “Mark brings a wealth of experience as a coach and support staffer. He will be integral in helping me set the vision for the Bearcats, while helping us achieve our goals on and off the field.”
