CINCINNATI – Cincinnati baseball sophomore infielder Quinton Coats and junior pitcher Nathan Taylor both received All-America accolades on Wednesday.
Coats was placed on the first team by Perfect Game and the second team by the National College Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA). and Taylor earned a spot on the Perfect Game third team. Both players are receiving All-America nods for the first time in their careers.
The recognition comes one day after both were named All-Region by ABCA/Rawlings. Coats and Taylor and the 11th and 12th All-Americans in program history.
Coats was named the National College Baseball Writers’ Association (NCBWA) District 5 Player of the Year last Friday. He is also the second Bearcat in as many seasons to be named a first-team All-American after Kerrington Cross received that honor last year from multiple outlets. The Olathe, Kan. native turned in one of the best offensive seasons ever by a Bearcat, setting single-season school records in home runs (28) and total bases (183) while tying the single-season RBI record (79). Coats hit .339 and slugged .738 and ended his season ranking among the Top 10 nationally in home runs, total bases, and RBI.
Taylor is the first UC pitcher to be named an All-American since Tim Burman in 1974. He earned his third all-conference nod this season and left his mark on the Cincinnati record book, setting career records for wins (22) and strikeouts (276) while also breaking the single-season strikeout record this year (115). As of the end of Cincinnati’s season, Taylor ranked among the Top 20 pitchers nationally in strikeouts.
