TicketsCINCINNATI — The Cincinnati volleyball team fell 3-1 to No. 9 Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats dropped to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 play, while the Sun Devils improved to 10-3 and 1-1. Arizona State won the match 25-16, 25-15, 22-25, 25-20.
Cincinnati had three players reach double figures in kills. Nina Scrucca and Sydney Nolan each recorded 11, while Ligia Williams added 10. Scrucca also contributed six blocks, while Williams finished with five total blocks.
Arizona State outhit Cincinnati .304 to .107 and held advantages in assists (55-34), digs (53-37) and blocks (12-8).
Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year Noemie Glover led the Sun Devils with 23 kills while hitting .354. She also recorded nine digs and seven blocks.
Cincinnati battled back from an early 9-3 deficit in the opening set. The Bearcats used an 8-1 run, highlighted by back-to-back aces from Andrea Simovski, to take an 11-10 lead. Arizona State answered with eight straight points and went on to take the set 25-16.
The Bearcats again built an early advantage in the second set, using a 7-0 run to turn a 6-6 tie into an 11-6 lead. Cincinnati maintained its advantage until Arizona State responded with an 11-1 run to take control at 19-15. The Sun Devils closed out the set 25-15.
Cincinnati came out strong in the third set, hitting .542 with 16 kills and just three errors. The set featured nine ties, with the Bearcats taking a 17-14 lead following a Williams kill. Arizona State pulled even at 21-21, but Cincinnati scored four of the final five points to win 25-22 and extend the match.
The Bearcats carried that momentum into the fourth set, taking a 14-13 lead on a Williams kill. Scrucca followed with back-to-back kills to push the advantage to 16-13. Arizona State answered with a 7-2 run to move ahead 20-18 before scoring the final five points of the match to claim the set 25-20.
