SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Cincinnati men’s golf team fell to a red-hot Baylor squad in the final match of Big 12 Match Play Wednesday at The Country Club of Salt Lake. For the week, junior Leo Wessel, sophomore Brayden Miller and freshman Aidan Wilson each earned multiple match-play victories.
The tournament marked the final time the Bearcats tee it up this fall, with Cincinnati teeing it up next at the Battle at Briar’s Creek Feb. 15-16 in Johns Island, S.C.
After falling 2-down early, Wessel battled back to take a lead on the second hole, his 10th of the round. He held that lead until dropping the final two holes to Baylor’s Tyler Sanford, who came away with the 1-up win. Miller got out to a hot start, winning his first two holes and holding a lead through seven, but Baylor’s Alex Heard birdies six of seven holes before holding on for a 2&1 win.
Wilson won his initial hole with a birdie at the par-4 10th but dropped a shot and a hole on the par-3 11th to knot the match. Baylor Davis Ovard took the lead with a birdie at the par-4 14th before Wilson eventually knotted the match with an eagle at the par-5 18th. However, Ovard responded to win four of five holes late on their second nine for a 4&2 win.
The Bears’ Jonas Appel then lead throughout his match with Bearcats’ fifth year Ryan Ford on his way to a 5&4 win and Baylor’s Jack Murphy birdied six of his first seven holes to top Cincinnati senior Timmy Hollenbeck, 7&6.
