BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped its second straight game at UAB on Friday, falling by a score of 8-3.
UC scored the first runs of the game in the third inning, taking a 2-0 lead, but the Blazers responded with three solo home runs in the bottom half of the inning to go up 3-2. They would add to their lead in the fourth and fifth innings, building a lead that Cincinnati was unable to overcome.
The Bearcats’ offense produced 12 hits on Friday, with four players recording multi-hit efforts. Sophomore Derrick Pitts went 3-for-4 and while fellow sophomores Jackson Smith, Charlie Niehaus, and Conlan Daniel all had two hits apiece. For Pitts, it was his third straight multi-hit effort and second consecutive game with three hits.
Niehaus also hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot that led off the sixth.
Senior Logan Knight made the start and struck out three in four innings of work. Four others saw time out of the bullpen: redshirt senior Joel Pineiro, sophomore Brendin Oliver, and redshirt sophomore Bradley Coulter. Coulter struck out two in a scoreless eighth inning, his first action since 2024 after missing last year due to injury.
For Pineiro, his two shutout frames constituted his second scoreless outing of the week. He pitched the ninth inning in Tuesday’s win at No. 9 Auburn.
Game three between the Bearcats and Blazers is set for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
