Greg Gillum joined the University of Cincinnati in the Summer of 2020 as the football program’s chief of staff.
In his role at UC, Gillum will oversee the day-to-day operations of the coaching staff and manage the football budget. He will coordinate the execution of strategic initiatives and serves as a liaison between the football program and the rest of the department. Gillum will also manage the recruiting office along with the oversight of player development, academics and community service.
A veteran of almost 40 years as a coach and administrator at the high school and collegiate level, he joins the Bearcats staff after working as the director of mentoring for the Columbus City Schools for the past five-plus years. In that role, Gillum helped oversee a team to assist in finding an adult mentor for every student in the district who wanted one.
Prior to working in public education, Gillum spent 10 years at Ohio State from 2005-15, working as the director of high school relations from 2012-15. Prior to the 2009 season, he was promoted to director of football operations for player personnel and served in the role until 2012. He joined the Ohio State staff in 2005 as assistant recruiting coordinator.
During his time with the Buckeyes, Gillum touched all facets of the program, including camps, clinics, logistics, personnel, recruiting and team travel along with a host of gameday responsibilities.
He spent nine years as an assistant coach at Akron and one at Ashland before arriving at Ohio State in 2005.
Gillum spent 12 years coaching at the high school level, including the first nine as an assistant to Lee Owens at Galion, Lancaster and Massillon Washington high schools.
From 1992-94 Gillum was the head coach at Lyndhurst Brush High School near Cleveland. He then rejoined Owens at Akron in 1995 and spent the next nine seasons there as recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach, mentoring Akron’s all-time leading receiver, Matt Cherry, a recent Academy Award winner and formerly of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Gillum spent the 2004 season with Owens at Ashland before joining Jim Tressel’s staff at Ohio State.
A native of Plymouth, Ohio, Gillum earned a degree in business education from Ohio State in 1983. He went on to secure a master’s degree in educational administration from Dayton in 1990.
Gillum and his wife Jody have two sons, Tyler and Tanner, and a daughter, Myriah.
