Ryan brings 11 years of experience working in Division I athletic departments, including two years at Ohio State University (2000-02) and a nine-year stint at Arizona State University (2002-11). Throughout his time in athletics communications, Ryan has worked with a varying array of collegiate sports, including cross country, soccer, tennis, track and field, softball, swimming and diving, water polo and wrestling.
Prior to arriving at UC, Ryan was out of the communications profession four years as he worked with his family at their businesses in his hometown. During that time, however, he remained connected to collegiate athletics as an outside contractor for StatBroadcast. As an on-site assistant, Ryan worked football conference championship games in the Big Ten and SEC; major bowl games including the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta and Cactus; and also conference basketball tournaments in the Big Ten (men and women). Ryan also has spent time assisting the statistics crew on game days for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Before returning to the Buckeye State, Ryan worked as an Assistant Director (2002-07) in Sun Devils media relations department before being elevated to Associate Director (2007-11). The primary contact for cross country, track and field, water polo and wrestling during his tenure in Tempe, Ryan also oversaw the women's soccer team for two years, served as a meet director for home track and field events and was the primary contact for ASU Olympic history.
While with ASU, Ryan had the opportunity to see four of his teams capture national titles, including the 2007 and 2008 NCAA Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships, the 2008 NCAA Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships and the 2008 NCAA Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships. The women's track & field program and the wrestling program also captured multiple conference crowns.
Individually during his nine years in the Valley of the Sun, Ryan also worked with 13 different student-athletes that combined to capture 27 individual NCAA titles, including Jackie Johnson (7x multi-event track & field champion) and Anthony Robles (2011 NCAA Wrestling Champion at 125 pounds). Of all the Sun Devils he worked with, 12 have gone on to represent their nations in the Olympic Games.
A native of Hamilton, Ohio, Ryan earned his degree from OSU in December 2001. During his time as an undergraduate, Ryan worked as a team manager for the Buckeyes women's basketball program for three seasons before interning in OSU's athletics communications department where he assisted the full-time staff with coverage of women's soccer, wrestling and men's tennis. Following graduation, Ryan remained on staff for seven months, serving as the primary contact for softball.
