Payne wins two crowns in final day

Cincinnati won the 2004 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.---With a steady blend of top-five finishes and three individual champions, the University of Cincinnati men?s track and field team captured the 2004 Outdoor Championship on Saturday at Cardinal Park.

The Bearcats registered a convincing win, scoring 159.5 points to 120 for Houston. On the women?s side, Cincinnati placed sixth of 13 squads with 48 points. In leading the Bearcat men to the title, UC head coach Bill Schnier was tabbed the C-USA Coach of the Year.

David Payne was the star of the day for Cincinnati as he won both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles to earn C-USA Co-Athlete of the Year honors. In the 110 hurdles, Payne set a C-USA meet and Cardinal Park record with a time of 13.68. Payne also blistered the field in the 400 hurdles, setting a school and Cardinal Park record of 51.20.

The Bearcats? 4x400 meter relay squad earned an NCAA qualifying mark of 3:10.84 in finishing second in the final track event of the day. Kenny Wade also had an outstanding day for UC, finishing fifth in both the 100 (10.51) and 200 meter (21.13) dashes. The Bearcats dominated the 800 meters, placing four runners in the top six, led by Jake Richards? second place finish in a time of 1:52.29.

The pole vault was another outstanding event for the UC men, as they placed 2-3-4 with Chad Beamer (16-4 3/4), Chris Wineberg (16-4 3/4) and Dan Albrinck (15-11) leading the Bearcats.

The women?s team was highlighted by four top-five finishes on the day. Monique Brent placed the highest for UC finishing third in the 400 meters in a time of 54.91. Rene Hein tied for fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5-6, while Jo Young was fifth in the shot put with a heave of 46-0. UC?s 4x400 meter relay squad rounded out the top fives, finishing fifth in 3:49.65.

The members of the Bearcats that have qualified for the NCAA Mid-East Regionals will compete May 28-29 in Baton Rouge, La.
