// COACH WINEBERG
Former University of Cincinnati All-American Chris Wineberg returned for his 18th year as the Bearcats’ Associate Head Coach for the 2023-24 seasons and once again had a hand in seeing several Bearcats make a name for themselves on the conference and national stages. Not only have his women dominated the high jump competitions in the American Athletic Conference since the inception of the league in 2013-14, Wineberg’s athletes have accounted for 16 All-America accolades while also rewriting the program’s record books along the way as the former decathlete continues to work with the combined events, the 400m and the high jump.

// COACHING EXPERIENCE
Since Wineberg joined the staff in the Fall of 2006 as an assistant coach, he has worked with several different areas of the program. Initially, he was tasked with coaching the men’s and women’s sprinters. Then, in the Fall of 2015, upon being promoted to his current title of Associate Head Coach, his coaching duties changed to the current structure: combined events, high jump and 400m dash.

Throughout his 17 seasons with the program, Wineberg’s Bearcats have put together solid marks that have led to 59 school records, 31 individual and relay conference crowns, 56 NCAA Preliminary/First Round selections, 24 berths into the NCAA Championship meet and 17 All-America honors.

Wineberg also served as a coach and training partner for his wife, Mary Wineberg, for seven years. During her professional career, she was one of the world’s top 400m runners and won Olympic Gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 4x400-meter relay. The former Mary Danner ranked as high as eighth in the world in the 400m dash during her career.

// NATIONAL EXPOSURE
Since joining the AAC, Wineberg and his athletes have been fixtures at the NCAA Championships. On the women’s side, Erika Hurd got the ball rolling by earning USTFCCCA All-America accolades in the high jump at both the 2015 NCAA Indoor and 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships. From there, Hurd (4x), Loretta Blaut (6x) and Taylor Beard (4x) have continued to add to that haul with Blaut finishing as the national runner-up at the 2018 indoor championships and qualified to the 2018 outdoor meet as the top-ranked (tied) woman in the NCAA. Beard was the latest Bearcat to add to the total has she earned All-American honors in both the indoor and outdoor season in 2023. On the men’s side, 2018 also saw a historic first as he worked with Alex Bloom, helping the senior qualify to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the heptathlon, marking the first time in program history a UC man has reached the national event in the indoor combined events.

// HIGH JUMP DEVELOPMENT
In recent years, especially on the women’s side, Wineberg has turned Cincinnati into High Jump U. Since the league formed in 2013-14, 18 championship events have been contested in the American Athletic Conference with UC women winning 13 of those crowns, including 7 indoor titles in a row and six overall crowns after Beard swept the crowns at the 2021 and 2023 AAC Indoor and AAC Outdoor meets. But, the success attained has not been limited to the conference level as both Blaut (6x), Hurd (4x) and Beard (4x) have collected 16x USTFCCCA All-America accolades in the event at the national meets as well.

In 2023, Taylor Beard was the leader of a dominate high jump group. She swept the AAC high jump championships for the second time in her career and earned second-team All-American honors at both the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships. Beard also broke the UC indoor high jump record with a mark of 1.88m. During the outdoor season Wineberg led a school record four high jumpers to qualify for the NCAA East First Round, no other shcool had two.

In 2021, the newest star of the Bearcat high jump program, Taylor Beard, earned All-American honors in both the indoor and outdoor high jump. She finished 13th overall at the NCAA indoor championships and 16th overall at the outdoor championships.

In 2019, Blaut capped off her illustrious UC career by earning her sixth All-American honor with a third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Blaut also added one more AAC conference title by recording a mark of 1.82m and making her the most decorated women’s UC athlete in history.

In 2018, Blaut continued to dominate as she won every indoor meet she entered except one, the 2018 NCAA meet in which she tied for the title before settling for the national runner-up trophy following a seven-round jump-off. In that meet, she cleared 1.87m (6-01.50) to tie for the school record and score  eight points for the team, helping UC finish 12th nationally, the highest team finish in program history. Outdoors, she remained undefeated and cleared 1.88m (6-2.00) to win her fourth AAC title in a row, break the UC, stadium, conference overall and conference meet record in the event while tying for the NCAA lead before taking second nationally once again despite puring rain and hail. Blaut, who earned the AAC Female Field Performance of the Meet award at the indoor and outdoor championships, was not the only champion in the high jump on the year as Bloom won the men’s indoor crown, giving the Bearcats three of the four titles in 2018.

Although not as many awards were collected in 2017, the year was still highly successful as Blaut won both high jump titles at the AAC meets, including the indoor title after being sidelined with an injury prior to the season. Although she didn’t qualify for the NCAA indoor meet, Blaut did advance to the outdoor championships where she earned All-America honors once again.

The 2016 season was a banner year for the high jump group once again with both Hurd and Blaut leading the way with high marks and numerous honors. Hurd earned USTFCCCA All-America First Team honors indoors before capturing Second Team honors outdoors, giving her four accolades for her career and making her the most decorated female in program history. She also won the 2016 American Athletic Conference indoor title for the third year in a row.

Blaut joined Hurd as a two-time All-American during the year, taking Second Team honors indoors and First Team honors outdoors for the first accolades of her young career. Both women qualified for and competed in the high jump at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field at the end of the season.

On the men’s side, Wineberg helped a pair of men to big improvements on the year, including Jordan Hardiman, who cleared 2.11m (6-11.00) at the conference’s outdoor meet to finish third overall and earn all-conference accolades while posting the eighth-best clearance in school history. Bloom also had a strong season as broke the indoor heptathlon high jump record (2.07m) while moving up to second on the outdoor decathlon high jump list (2.05m).

// MULTI-EVENT DEVELOPMENT
A standout in the combined events during his competitive days, Wineberg has passed his knowledge on to his current Bearcats with his group posting outstanding results and records. Over the past four season, his group has collected two All-America honor while recording 16 school record marks in the individual events of competitions, including 14 records by Bloom, who earned USTFCCCA All-America Second Team honors in 2018 after placing 12th at the NCAA Indoor Championships as the first UC man to earn a berth into the national indoor meet in the combined events in program history.

The latest multi's success story occured in 2023 as the deleopment of Dominique Hall paid off as he became the third Bearcat to claim the AAC Outdoor decathalon title scoring 7498 points. Hall also placed second in the heptathlon duirng the indoor championships and was the first one out of qualfiying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Bloom was followed Damien Berthenet in 2020, who became the second Bearcat to earn a berth into the national indoor meet—Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the NCAA Indoor Championships were canceled. Berthenet won the 2020 AAC Heptathlon individual title scoring 5,693, three points behind Bloom’s 2018 record.

In 2021 Cannon Riddle would become the second Bearcat to win the men’s outdoor decathlon AAC individual title. He did so by scoring a total of 7,013 points.

In 2018, Bloom scored 5,696 points to not only punch his ticket to the national indoor meet in the heptathlon, but also broke the UC record previously held by Wineberg (5,616 points) as the senior recorded school heptathlon records in the 60m (7.00) and long jump (7.22m). Bloom was the final of 16 qualifiers into the national meet before finishing 12th nationally for his first All-America accolade. Also in 2018, Naomi Urbano won the pentathlon title at the AAC meet, giving her three combined event championships in a row after sweeping the 2017 crowns. Outdoors, Bloom defended his AAC decathlon crowns, winning his final combined event competition on his home turf as UC hosted the AAC meet while three women all scored in the Top 8 of heptathlon to collect 10 points for the team.

In 2017, Bloom broke several heptathlon and decathlon event records on his way to securing the decathlon title at the AAC Championships while Urbano collected a sweep of the indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon for the women. Urbano’s sweep marked the first time in program history that a UC woman captured the indoor and outdoor combined event titles in the same season, something Jasmine Cotten, one of the best in program history wasn’t able to do.

Heading into the AAC Era, Jasmine Cotten has arguably been Wineberg’s most successful project becoming a three-time All-Conference performer and a two-time All-American from 2008-12. More recently, he helped Bloom reach the USA Junior Nationals in the decathlon in 2015 and led Kaitlyn Good to a runner-up finish in the heptathlon at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships before the recent run of championships were attained.

// SPRINT DEVELOPMENT
The development of the sprinters has continued to grow under Wineberg. Outside of the success his individuals have achieved in the field and in the combined events, recent additions to the program, including Jimmy Brooks for the men and Tiona Lattimore for women, have seen great results and historical finishes earned. Both individuals have been instrumental in the success of the 4x400m relays with Lattimore helping the women’s outdoor squad reach the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history where they placed 15th overall to earn the first All-America honor for a relay in UC history. Lattimore recently qualified and competed in the 100m and 200m events at the NCAA East Preliminary Round, making her just the third woman to qualify for the double.

In 2017, Lattimore and Deanna Gesicki trained under Wineberg and were part of the historic relay that broke the school record three times in a row, including while winning the AAC title for the first time outdoors, then placing 12th in the NCAA East to earn the program’s first national berth and then finally in Oregon at the NCAA Finals. In her time with UC Lattimore has broken the school record in the 100m dash (11.52) and the freshman records in both the 200m (23.74) and 400m (54.08) events while also helping the indoor 4x400m and DMR, along with the outdoor 4x100m, 4x200m and 4x400m relays break school records.

In 2016, his sprint group accounted for one All-American honor, one conference title and seven NCAA Preliminary Round berths, including both 4x400m relay teams, a feat that had not happened for UC since the 2011 season. On the women’s side, Kenya Woodall completed her career for the Bearcats as one of the fastest sprinters of all-time, working to set school records in five different events, including the outdoor 100m (11.53), 200m (23.09) and 400m (51.78) and the indoor 200m (23.76) and 400m (53.73) with all records other than the 400m marks coming in 2016. A five-time all-conference honoree in 2016, Woodall also qualified and competed in both the 200m and 400m events at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trails – Track & Field. All of that effort paid off as Woodall left campus as an All-American after earning USTFCCCA Second Team accolades in the outdoor 400m.

While working with the men, Wineberg has coached a trio of conference champions, most recently coming in 2016 with Jimmy Brooks taking home gold in the 400m dash at the American Athletic Conference meet as he ran 46.04 to also post the second-best time in program history. Wineberg also has worked with Antoine Drakeford, who was as 2009 All-American while winning the 2008 and 2010 conference titles, and Darnell Gilbert, a 2014 indoor conference champion and outdoor runner-up.

Wineberg’s success also has come in the 4x400m relay as the 2016 racers broke school records in the women’s indoor and men’s outdoor races during the season. For the men, their time of 3:08.13 took down a six-year-old record, placed the team second in the conference and earned the group of Halen Witcher, Brooks, Nathan Smith and Nathan Alexander a berth into the NCAA Preliminary Round meet. On the women’s side, the group of Javette Lee, Bryana Robinson, Jada Grant and Woodall ran 3:41.33 to take over the record.

// TRACK & FIELD CAREER
Wineberg was a two-time conference champion in the decathlon at UC and an All-American in 2004. He holds the school record in the decathlon, with a score of 7,584. Wineberg graduated from UC in 2004 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was also honored as the Legion of Excellence Award winner for graduating with the highest senior GPA of the team in 2004. Post collegiately, Wineberg competed at the national level for two seasons and placed as high as fifth at the indoor U.S. National Meet in the heptathlon. In Fall 2015, Wineberg was inducted into the Greater Cincinnati Hall of Fame.

// PERSONAL LIFE
Wineberg is married to former UC 400-meter standout and 2008 Olympic gold medalist Mary (Danner) Wineberg. The couple has two daughters, Brooklyn and Olivia.
