Wineberg is the first All-American Bearcat decathlete |
AUSTIN, Texas ? University of Cincinnati senior Chris Wineberg (Springfield, Ohio/Northeastern) broke his own school-record in the decathlon to place eighth at the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Saturday.
Wineberg totaled 7,584 points on the same track on which he set the previous record in April. He finished in the top 10 in four of the 10 events, placing second in the pole vault and sixth in the 400-meters and 1500-meters.
Placing eighth gave Wineberg All-American honors, the first Bearcat decathlete to receive the honor. Coupled with David Payne?s sixth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, UC produced two All-Americans for the first time since 1973. The four team points placed UC 50th.
Payne will compete at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials from July 16-18, while Wineberg came 16 points short of provisionally qualifying for the competition.
