FOR STARTERS:
After an impressive opening meet, which saw the women's team start undefeated and the men's team go 2-1, the University of Cincinnati swimming and diving teams will hit the pool for two dual meets this weekend. On Friday, Nov. 4, the Bearcat women will head to Toledo for a meeting with the Rockets, beginning at 5 p.m. at the UT Student Recreation Center. Saturday, Nov. 5, UC will host its first meet of the season, as Western Kentucky comes to town. The meet will take place at the Silverlake Recreation Center in Erlanger, Ky. beginning at 2 p.m.
BEARCAT BITES:
Senior Ann Degenstein, the Conference USA Swimmer of the Year last season, returns to lead the women's team. Degenstein earned CSCAA Academic All-American honors after finishing 11th and 14th, respectively, in the 100 and 200 butterfly at the 2005 NCAA Championships.
The men's team will be led by seniors David Gustavsson and Ryan Yearwood, and sophomore Marcel Kleiner. The trio appeared on each of four school-record setting relay teams last season. Gustavsson won two C-USA Invitational titles, while Yearwood (50 free) and Kleiner (100 free) each grabbed a single event crown.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Bearcats opened the 2005-06 season on Oct. 29 at the Oakland Golden Grizzly Quadrangular. The women's squad posted an undefeated start to its season, winning seven event crowns in topping Wayne State and UW-Milwaukee, and tying host Oakland. The men's squad fell to Oakland, but outscored Wayne State and UW-Milwaukee.
Senior Ann Degenstein, an NCAA qualifier in two events in 2005, picked up where she left off last season, winning the 200 freestyle (1:52.54) and 200 butterfly (2:03.33). Newcomer Annelie Jonsson captured two individual titles, winning both the 200 breaststroke (2:21.77) and the 200 IM (2:07.55). Also winning individual titles on the women's side were Paola Rivas in the 1,000 free (10:23.13) and Randi Vogel in the 200 back (2:05.31). The women's 400 freestyle relay squad finished first, clocking in at 3:34.44.
The men's team posted four first-place finishes, including a 400 freestyle relay victory. Senior David Gustavsson, a 2004-05 CSCAA Academic All-American, won the 200 IM in 1:54.08. Freshman Bjorn Mates captured the 200 backstroke in 1:50.61, while sophomore Marcel Kleiner rounded out the UC winners, grabbing the 200 freestyle title in 1:40.62.
BEARCATS TO OPEN KEATING NATATORIUM:
The UC swimming and diving teams will welcome the addition of the new Keating Natatorium in the heart of Varsity Village on the Cincinnati campus. The Bearcats have spent the last three years training at St. Xavier High School. The lack of diving facilities at St. Xavier have made it difficult for UC to field a competitive diving squad. Keating Natatorium will give the Bearcats and opporunity to host home meets and field an entire team. The natatorium is slated to open in January.
