ERLANGER, Ky. -- The University of Cincinnati men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped dual meets against Western Kentucky today (Nov. 5) at the Silverlake Recreation Center. The Bearcat men fell, 103-101, while the women were outscored, 114-89. UC's Annelie Jonsson (Skurup, Sweden/Osterportskolan), Karen Brasier (Galveston, Texas/Ball), Marcel Kleiner (Heilbronn, Germany/Hohen Staufen Gymnasium), and Bjorn Mates (Eislingen, Germany/Wirtemberg Gymnasium) each won two event titles.
Brasier won the 100 (52.19) and 200 (1:53.79) freestyles while Jonsson captured the 200 IM (2:09.08) and 200 breaststroke (2) titles. Ann Degenstein (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) won the 200 butterfly (2:06.88) and Paola Rivas (Mexico City, Mexico/Mission Viejo) finished first in the 500 freestyle (5:05.66), rounding out the UC winners on the women's side.
Leading the men was sophomore Kleiner, who won the 100 (45.96) and 200 (1:40.11) freestyles and was part of the winning 400 freestyle (3:04.08) relay squad. Mates, a freshman, won both the 200 IM (1:55.09) and the 200 backstroke (1:49.23), and also swam a leg in the 400 medley relay team, which finished first in 3:25.23. Seniors David Gustavsson (Aby, Sweden/Ebersteinska) and Steve Marshall (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) were the other Bearcat winners. Gustavsson grabbed the 200 butterfly title by over a second, finishing in 1:52.16. Marshall, who earned his first title of the season, won the 200 breaststroke in 2:06.76.
The Bearcat men will head to Columbus, Ohio next weekend for a dual meet against the Buckeyes at 5 p.m.
