FOR STARTERS:
The University of Cincinnati men's and women's swimming and diving teams will head to Bloomington, Ind. for the competitive Indiana Invitational, Nov. 18-20 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The annual meet features several of the region's top squads, including the host Hoosiers, whose men are currently ranked No. 10 in the country, while the IU women rank 15th nationally.
BEARCAT BITES:
Freshman Annelie Jonsson has won each of the six races she has entered this season. The versatile Jonsson has won the 100 breast (once), 200 breast (twice), 200 IM (twice) and 400 IM (once). She is ranked 73rd in the nation in the 200 breast, 83rd in the 200 IM, and 44th in the 400 IM.
Senior Ann Degenstein has won five individual titles this season, and her 200 butterfly (36th) and 100 butterfly (58th) times are ranked in the top 60 nationally.
Freshmen Bjorn Mates and Jakub Carda have made an immediate impact on the 2005-06 Bearcat squad. Mates has won four of the seven individual events he has entered and Carda has finished no lower than sixth in each of his first nine individual events. With the emergence of the two youngsters, UC features five NCAA-caliber swimmers, including 2004-05 `B' qualifiers seniors David Gustavsson and Ryan Yearwood and sophomore Marcel Kleiner.
Senior Steve Marshall, returning after missing the entire 2004-05 campaign, has been impressive thus far this season. The Akron native has won two 200 breaststroke titles and finished second in a third. He holds the top UC time in the 200 breast and is behind only David Gustavsson in the 100 breast.
LAST TIME OUT:
Senior David Gustavsson won three individual crowns, but the Bearcat men fell to Ohio State, 155-124, on Nov. 11 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Bearcats, now 2-3 in dual meets this season, earned seven event titles, with Gustavsson leading the way. The 2004 Academic All-American won the 100 breaststroke (57.49), the 100 freestyle (45.79), and the 100 butterfly (52.34). He also swam a leg on the 200 freestyle relay team, which won in 1:23.75. Other Bearcat winners included senior Steve Marshall in the 200 breaststroke (2:07.82), sophomore Steve Wood in the 500 freestyle (5:06.68) and freshman Bjorn Mates in the 200 backstroke (1:48.15). It was the fourth individual title of the season for the freshman from Germany.
BEARCATS TO OPEN KEATING NATATORIUM:
The UC swimming and diving teams will welcome the addition of the new Keating Natatorium in the heart of Varsity Village on the Cincinnati campus. The Bearcats have spent the last three years training at St. Xavier High School. The lack of diving facilities at St. Xavier have made it difficult for UC to field a competitive diving squad. Keating Natatorium will give the Bearcats and opporunity to host home meets and field an entire team. The natatorium is slated to open in January.
UP NEXT:
UC will head to Oxford, Ohio for the annual Miami Invitational on Dec. 2-4 at the Nixon Aquatic Center.
