OXFORD, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati men's and women's swimming and diving teams finished ninth and seventh, respectively, at the 12th annual Miami Invitational Saturday night at the Corwin Nixon Aquatic Center. The Bearcats saw five swimmers post NCAA `B' qualifying times and three school records fell.

Senior Ann Degenstein (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) met NCAA `B' qualifying marks in both the 100 (54.38) and 200 butterfly (1:58.58), winning both events and setting meet records in each. She broke her own school record in the prelims of the 200 fly, besting her 1:58.87 school mark, set last season.

Randi Vogel (Maineville, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) also set a school mark in finishing second in the 100 backstroke with a 56.70 in the finals. Her 56.39 in the prelims topped Tricia Staff's school record, set in 1992. She also finished second in the 200 back with a season-best 2:01.53.

Also on the women's side, Karen Brasier (Galveston, Texas/Ball) placed second in the 100 freestyle (51.70) and sixth in the 100 fly (56.26). Paola Rivas (Mexico City, Mexico/Mission Viejo) finished third in the 1650 freestyle in a season-best 16:59.17, while Annelie Jonsson (Skurup, Sweden/Osterportskolan) was a third-place finisher in the 400 IM, touching the wall in 4:27.66. Gerdien de Jong (Bussum, Netherlands/Goois Lyceum) finished second in the 50 freestyle with a season-best 24.00. The 400 freestyle relay squad placed first in 3:26.08 while the 400 medley relay team finished second in 3:50.12.

For the men, Steve Marshall (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) set a school record and met an NCAA `B' qualifying time in winning the 100 breast. Marshall's 55.58 in the prelims topped teammate David Gustavsson's () one-year-old school mark. Marshall also captured the 200 breast title in 2:03.03, shaving over three seconds off his season-best time. Gustavsson finished third in the 100 breast with a 56.46 and placed second in the 100 fly (48.65), finishing just .01 behind Oakland's Chris Sullivan. Gustavsson also won the 200 IM, posting a season-best 1:50.74.

Freshman Jakub Carda (Brno, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnasium) won the 400 IM in a season-best 3:55.64. Fellow freshman Bjorn Mates (Eislingen, Germany/Wirtemberg Gymnasium) finished third in the 100 backstroke, posting a 50.91. Seniors Ryan Yearwood (Post of Spain, Trinidad/Queen's Royal College) and Gustavsson each placed in the top five in the 50 freestyle, finishing third (20.65) and fifth (20.95), respectively.

The Bearcats won the 400 medley relay, posting a meet-record 3:19.52 and the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:01.21. The 200 medley relay squad finished second in 1:31.13, while the 200 freestyle relay team posted a season-best 1:22.55 in finishing second.

The Bearcats will have time off to train over the holidays and will return to competition on Friday, Jan. 13 against BIG EAST rival Louisville in the first meet to be held at the new Keating Natatorium.
