DAYTON, Ohio - Cincinnati got 21 points from Treasure Humphries and a key eight points by Emy Ogide to hold off Dayton, 65-55, on Thursday evening in UD Arena. The win was the sixth-straight for UC and upped its record to 9-1, while UD had a four-game win streak snapped to fall to 6-3.
Humphries made a career-high four three-pointers and added three steals. Ogide equaled her career-best with the eight points and also had three rebounds and one block in just nine minutes of play. Shelly Bellman grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with six points and Micah Harvey handed out four assists.
UC made a season-high five treys on 11 attempts and was 14-of-20 from the foul line. The Bearcats committed just 15 turnovers and scored 22 points off of 17 Dayton miscues.
Cincinnati-native Cara Wright led the Flyers with 18 points and 22 rebounds, while Jennifer Strong added 15 points and Kiki Lund chipped in 13.
The Bearcats led by as many as 15 in first half, but saw the margin drop to six by halftime. After a Humphries triple and Jill Stephens's jumper upped the lead to 37-26 to open the second half, UC was outscored 12-0 over the next five minutes. Strong has six of the points and Lund made one of her three triples as UD took a 38-37 lead.
UC responded quickly and definitively, holding the Flyers scoreless for the next five minutes and scoring 13-straight points to reassert control. Anne Stephens' three-point play regained the lead for the Bearcats and Humphries added a free throw and a three-pointer in the run. It was capped by Angel Morgan, who made her first three-pointer of the year and then a driving lay-up to push the lead to 50-38 with 8:39 left.
The Flyers tried to cut into the lead, as four front court players for UC were in foul trouble. Ogide, however, kept the UC margin near double-figures, scoring the next six points for the Bearcats.
UD never got closer than 10 in the final five minutes. UC shot just 37 percent in the second half, but made 10-of-14 free throws.
"We'll take a road win any day," said head coach Laurie Pirtle. "Emy and Angel sparked us when we needed it and then our pressure defense got going. The impressive thing is that the team stayed together the whole time. Even when UD took the lead by one, our players were convinced they were going to win."
UC faces its final preparation for its inaugural season of BIG EAST play when the Bearcats travel to face Oregon State on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m. ET.
It was a two-woman game for the Bearcats at the open as Humphries and Anne Stephens scored the first 13 points for UC. A pair of close baskets by Stephens and a Humphries jumper propelled UC to a 6-0 lead after just 1:13 of play.
Humphries added a three-pointer and a pair of free throws and Stephens scored underneath as the Bearcats took a 13-4 lead with 15:37 to play.
Humphries' second triple of the half ignited a 9-1 run by UC, as the junior guard added another jumper and then made a steal leading to a score to push the advantage to 28-13 at the 8:30 mark. The Bearcats offense struggled for the rest of the half, however, as the starting frontcourt of Anne and Jill Stephens was forced to the bench with two fouls apiece.
The Flyers began to take advantage in the final two minutes of the half, as Wright was a one-woman team for UD. With UC leading by 14, Strong scored on a driving lay-up and Wright followed with three-straight scores to end the half as UD pulled to 32-26 at the break.
Wright had a double-double in the first half for UD with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Only three other Flyers got on the board as they shot just .333 from the floor in the half and were 5-of-9 from the line.
UC was led by Humphries with 14 points and Anne Stephens had six in just seven minutes of playing time. The Bearcats shot .433 from the floor and had a 22 to 19 edge on the boards. Four players had four rebounds apiece for UC.
