FOR STARTERS:
The University of Cincinnati men's and women's swimming and diving teams will participate in their first BIG EAST dual meets this weekend when they travel to West Virginia and Pittsburgh. The Bearcats will take on the Mountaineers on Friday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. at the WVU Natatorium. UC will then head to for an 11 a.m. start against the Panthers on Saturday, Jan. 21 at Trees Pool.
BEARCAT BITES:
Senior Ann Degenstein is currently ranked in the top 14 in the country in both the 100 fly (14th) and the 200 fly (6th).
Junior Randi Vogel has won three individual titles this year and has met the NCAA `B' time in the 200 backstroke, while setting a school record in the 100 back.
Senior Steve Marshall, returning after missing the entire 2004-05 campaign, has been impressive thus far this season. The native has won three 200 breaststroke titles and captured one 100 breast title. He holds the school record in the 100 breaststroke (55.58).
Freshmen Jakub Carda and Bjorn Mates have made immediate impacts this season for the Bearcat men. Carda has captured one 400 IM title and ranks 24th in the nation in the event. Mates has won each of the five 200 backstroke competitions he has entered this season, ranking 38th nationally in the event.
LAST TIME OUT:
The UC men's and women's teams opened the 2006 portion of their season on Jan. 13 at the () Quadrangular in the . The men's squad topped and , but fell to host . The UC women beat Kenyon, but were outscored by the Cardinals and RedHawks.
The men's team was led by sophomore Marcel Kleiner, who won both the 100 (46.40) and 200 freestyle (1:41.35). Seniors Ryan Yearwood and David Gustavsson captured the 50 freestyle (20.83) and 200 butterfly (1:51.23), respectively. The trio combined with Steve Wood to win the 400 freestyle (3:04.27) and 400 medley relays (3:23.58). Freshman Bjorn Mates won his fifth 200 backstroke title of the season, touching the wall in 1:50.80.
The women boasted two winners, junior Randi Vogel in the 200 backstroke (2:04.68) and freshman Annelie Jonsson in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.73). Vogel also finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:53.37) while senior All-American Ann Degenstein placed second in the 200 butterfly (2:04.30).
BEARCATS TO OPEN KEATING NATATORIUM:
The UC swimming and diving teams will welcome the addition of the new Keating Natatorium in the heart of on the campus. The Bearcats have spent the last three years training at . The lack of diving facilities at St. Xavier has made it difficult for UC to field a competitive diving squad. Keating Natatorium will give the Bearcats an opportunity to host home meets and field an entire team. The natatorium is slated to open in February.
