FOR STARTERS:
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will take to the pool this weekend at their first BIG EAST Championships. Eleven men's and 11 women's teams will take part in the meet, which kicks off on Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.
BEARCAT BITES:
Senior Ann Degenstein is currently ranked in the top 15 in the country in both the 100 fly (15th) and the 200 fly (7th).
Junior Randi Vogel has won four individual titles this year and has met the NCAA `B' time in the 200 backstroke, while setting a school record in the 100 back.
Senior Steve Marshall, returning after missing the entire 2004-05 campaign, has been impressive in 2005-06. The native has won three 200 breaststroke titles and captured two 100 breast titles. He holds the school record in the 100 breaststroke (55.58).
The Bearcats have qualified 24 individuals for the BIG EAST Championships, including Jakub Carda, David Gustavsson, Steve Wood and Akvilina Vaicaityte, who have each qualified for four events.
LAST TIME OUT:
UC dropped dual meets on Feb. 4 against at the . The No. 17 Wildcat men (7-3) outscored the Bearcat men, 155-96, while the 25th-ranked women (8-3) defeated UC, 155-100. The men's team wrapped up its dual meet season with a 5-7 record, while the women finished 4-7-1.
The Bearcat women captured six individual titles, two each by juniors Randi Vogel and Karen Brasier, and the men earned four, led by a pair of victories from freshman Bjorn Mates.
Vogel captured the 200 backstroke title with a 2:03.42 and won the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:07.68. Brasier was a winner in the 100 freestyle, posting a 52.68. She also won the 100 butterfly in 57.89. Junior Gerdien de Jong won the 50 freestyle in 24.06. The 400 freestyle relay team of Brasier, Vogel, de Jong, and senior Ann Degenstein won the event in 3:30.41.
Mates captured his sixth 200 backstroke title of the season, finishing in 1:51.07. He was also a winner in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 1:54.71. Senior Ryan Yearwood was a champ in the 50 freestyle. He also led off the winning 400 freestyle relay team consisting of sophomores Marcel Kleiner, Steve Wood, and senior David Gustavsson.
BEARCATS OPEN KEATING NATATORIUM:
The UC swimming and diving teams welcomed the addition of the new Keating Natatorium in the heart of on the campus. The facility opened for training in early February. The Bearcats have spent the last three years training at . The lack of diving facilities at St. Xavier has made it difficult for UC to field a competitive diving squad. Keating Natatorium gives the Bearcats an opportunity to host home meets, field an entire team, and recruit high-caliber student-athletes.
