CINCINNATI, Ohio---A total of 13 student-athletes will add their talents to the 2007 University of Cincinnati baseball team as head coach Brian Cleary announced the Bearcats' latest recruiting class. The class is comprised of six high school standouts, along with five Division I transfers and two former junior college players. Position breakdown of the group includes four pitchers, four infielders, two outfielders, a pair of two-way players and a catcher.
The class also has a strong Ohio flavor as eight of the 13 have roots in the Buckeye state. In-state prep players signed to become Bearcats include LHP/OF Brian Garman (Wapokeneta, Ohio/Wapokeneta), 1B/LHP Kevin Johnson (Willard, Ohio/Willard) and INF Jamel Scott (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto).
Other high schoolers that will don the Bearcat red and black include RHP Scott Brothers (Delphi, Ind./Delphi), INF Michael Earley (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) and INF Tim McEndy (Malvern, Pa./Malvern Prep).
The Bearcats also will enjoy the addition of seven players from the college and junior college ranks. That list includes RHP John Baird (Delaware, Ohio/Birmingham Southern), C Ryan Baker (Portland, Maine/Daytona Beach CC), INF Spencer Goruk (Alpharetta, Ga./Phoenix College), RHP Michael Hill (Proctorville, Ohio/East Carolina), OF Michael Obyc (Powell, Ohio/Kent State) and RHP Billy Welsh (Westlake, Ohio/Tennessee Tech).
"I think this is another really good, athletic class that addresses several of our needs," stated Cleary. "This is the second group we have put together with our new facility and the membership in the BIG EAST. As we continue to do that, we feel like our success will continue as we are able to attract some of the nation's elite players."
Cincinnati's recruiting class was also set to include C Jesse D'Amico, but he was drafted and signed with the Milwaukee Brewers last month.
The Bearcats concluded the 2006 season with a record of 32-26, qualifying for the BIG EAST Tournament in the program's first season in the conference.
