- Six University of Cincinnati swimmers were named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Academic All-America teams. Senior standout Ann Degenstein (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) was named to the first team for the second consecutive season.
Gerdien de Jong (Bussum, The Netherlands/Goois Lyceum), David Gustavsson (, /Ebersteinska), Marcel Kleiner (, /Hohen Staufen Gymnasium), Bjorn Mates (, /Wirtemberg Gymnasium) and Ryan Yearwood (, Trinidad/Queen's ) earned honorable mention honors.
"The credit for this recognition goes exclusively to the student-athletes who earned it," head coach Monty Hopkins said of the group. "The accomplishments in the classroom and in the pool are a direct result of the dedication, discipline and ability of all members of the team in general and these six swimmers in particular. I am honored to have individuals of such high caliber and character as members of the Bearcats swimming & diving teams."
The Bearcats were also named Academic All-America teams by the CSCAA. The men's squad was ranked ninth in the country with a 3.24 collective grade point average. The women's team was 27th with a 3.36 GPA.
First team Academic All-American honors are awarded to those student-athletes that participate in the NCAA Championships and post at least a 3.5 GPA. Swimmers that meet NCAA `B' qualifier and the GPA requirement are rewarded with honorable mention laurels.
Degenstein, who earned a 3.73 grade point average in interior design, was ranked seventh in the nation in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 200 fly. She won both events at the 2006 BIG EAST Championships, the first BIG EAST titles in UC history, and set school records in both.
Gustavsson, Kleiner and Yearwood earned Academic All-American honorable mention honors for the second consecutive season. Gustavsson and Kleiner posted perfect 4.0 GPAs, while de Jong (3.93), Yearwood (3.83), and Mates (3.59) also surpassed the standards.
