FOR STARTERS:
The University of Cincinnati men's and women's swimming and diving teams will open the new year with a dual meet at BIG EAST rival Louisville on Saturday, Jan. 13. The meet will begin at 1 p.m. at the Ralph R. Wright Natatorium. It is the second of three dual matches against BIG EAST teams the Bearcats have schedule this season. Both UC teams fell to Pittsburgh in November. The Bearcats men are 1-3 in dual meets this season and the women are 0-4. The Cardinal women are 6-2 and the men are 3-4.
BEARCAT BITES:
Fifteen men and 12 women have already qualified for the 2007 BIG EAST Championships. Bjorn Mates has made the qualifying times in seven events and Jakub Carda and Marcel Kleiner have each done so in six. Alex Doyle leads the women with qualifying marks in six events. Five other women have done so in five events.
Senior Gerdien de Jong reached the NCAA `B' standard in the 100 free at the Miami Invitational and led off the UC record-setting 400 free relay team that also met the `B' standard.
LAST TIME VS. LOUISVILLE:
The Bearcats and Cardinals both participated in a quad meet at Miami (Ohio) on Jan. 13, 2006. The UC men placed second, two spots aheads of U of L, while the Bearcats women were third, behind the Cardinals. UC won seven event titles on the men's side, led by Marcel Kleiner's victories in the 100 and 200 freestyle. For the women, Randi Vogel (200 back) and Annelie Jonsson (200 breast) posted victories.
LAST TIME OUT:
The UC women posted seven event victories to earn a fifth place finish at the Miami Invitaional on Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. The men posted six top-four finished to place seventh. Senior Gerdien de Jong was the top scorer for the Bearcats, winning the 50 (23.72) and 100 free (50.87) and placing second in the 200 free (1:52.32). She also swam the first leg of the 400 free relay team that placed first in a school-record time of 3:23.95. For the men, Marcel Kleiner was the lone event winner, taking the 100 free in 45.43 seconds. The 200 medley relay team (1:32.05) also finished first.
