FOR STARTERS:
The University of Cincinnati indoor track & field team will head back to Bloomington, Ind. on Feb. 2-3 for the Indiana Relays, hosted by Indiana University. The Bearcats competed in the Gladstein Invitational last weekend at IU.
BEARCAT BITES:
Renee Hein is currently the top-ranked high jumper in the nation with a 6' 1-1/2" clearance. She has won both meets in which she has competed this season. The senior from Cincinnati twice qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and her current mark is an automatic qualifier for the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. on March 9-10.
Brittany Klima and Tara Meier share the top BIG EAST pole vault mark at 12' 5-1/2".
UC enters its second season of competition in the BIG EAST Conference in 2007 after finishing 14th at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships last season. The conference features 16 women's indoor track & field teams, constituting the largest league in the nation. The 2007 BIG EAST Championships will be held on March 9-10 at the University of Akron's Athletics Fieldhouse.
Seniors Shintara Carpenter (triple jump), Renee Hein (high jump), junior Brittany Klima (pole vault) and senior Ashley Wilhelm (60 meter hurdles, pentathlon) are returning indoor school record-holders.
Head coach Jim Schnur is in his 23rd year at Cincinnati and his sixth as head women's coach. Former Bearcats All-American Chris Wineberg is in his first year as assistant women's coach.
LAST TIME OUT:
UC earned two event wins and three second place finishes at the Gladstein Invitational hosted by Indiana on January 26 and 27. School-record holders Renee Hein and Brittany Klima brought home championships in the high jump and pole vault, respectively.
Hein's jump of 1.83 meters was just short of the school record she set in December and Klima cleared a height of 3.65 meters. Tara Meier was in the group just behind Klima and finished fourth.
Freshman Lilian Jelimo finished second in the 1 mile run (5:10.53), just .19 seconds behind the winner. Senior Karen Berling was second in the 5,000 meter run (17:40.98) and Monica Hundley was second in the 60 meter hurdles (8.76).
The 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Dennale Speakman, freshmen Ashley Arnold and Jasmine Cotton and junior Dominique Davis was second in 3:55.68.
UP NEXT:
UC will travel to Bowling Green, Ohio, for the All-Ohio Championships on Saturday, Feb. 10, where state bragging rights will be on the line.
