CINCINNATI -- Junior Dan Osterbrock has been named the BIG EAST Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance in the University of Cincinnati's 7-1 victory over Georgetown on Friday night (April 18) and teammate Mike Spina earned Honor Roll mention for his play the week of April 14-20.
A graduate of Cincinnati's Colerain High School, Osterbrock was chosen for the honor after he picked up the victory in Game One of the Bearcats' series against Georgetown, helping Cincinnati stay within a game of first place in the BIG EAST race. The junior worked eight innings, scattering four hits, and allowing one earned run with nine strikeouts and no walks to win for the fourth time in as many outings.
A first-team all-BIG EAST selection in 2007, Osterbrock leads the Bearcats this season with his 5-2 record and 2.79 earned run average. The Southpaw has shown outstanding command, recording 43 punch outs against seven base on balls in 58 innings on the mound.
A transfer from Florida Community College, Spina went 9-for-18 (.500) at the plate, with six runs scored and five RBIs. The Newberry, Fla. product notched a double and two home runs on his way to a .889 slugging percentage to lead the Bearcats to a 3-2 record last week. It marks the third time this season the third baseman has been honored by the BIG EAST.
Spina is currently leading the Bearcats with seven home runs, 32 runs batted in, and a .549 slugging percentage. A starter in all but two games at the hot corner, His .331 batting average is second on the team.
Cincinnati continues its string of six games in six days this evening when it hosts Xavier. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Marge Schott Stadium.
