The University of Cincinnati football team plays its second-straight road game Friday night as the Bearcats head to Huntington, W.Va., for the first time since 1937 to take on Marshall in a prime-time ESPN game at 8 p.m. in Edwards Stadium. UC is 3-1 on the season and coming off a 17-15 come-from-behind road win over Akron on Sept. 27. Marshall is 3-2 on the season beating Illinois State (35-10), Memphis (17-16), and Southern Miss (34-27), and losing to Wisconsin (51-14), and West Virginia (27-3).THE SERIES
Cincinnati and Marshall meet for the 12th time on the gridiron Friday. UC leads the all-time series 7-3-1. Two of the team's past three meetings have occurred in bowl games. Marshall won the 2000 Motor City Bowl while UC was victorious in the 2004 Fort Worth Bowl. The Bearcats knocked off the Herd, 40-14, a year ago in Nippert Stadium.THE COACHES
Brian Kelly, the 2007 BIG EAST Coach of the Year, is in his second full season at the helm of the Cincinnati football program with an 14-4 record and a 18-year career mark of 151-55-2. Kelly led the Bearcats to a school-record-tying 10 wins in 2007 and a victory in the Papajohns.com Bowl. He won two NCAA Division II National Championships at Grand Valley State and led Central Michigan to the 2006 Mid-American Conference Championship. He is the leader in victories among active BIG EAST coaches and is the only current BIG EAST coach with 150 career wins.Mark Snyder is 15-25 in his fourth season with the Thundering Herd. The South Point, Ohio native is 0-1 against UC.
STREAKS, STORYLINES, SIDEBARS
- UC will field its third different starting quarterback of the 2008 season and the fifth in Brian Kelly's 18 games as UC's head coach. CHazz Anderson, and Zach Collaros will vie for the starting nod in practice this week.
- Mardy Gilyard leads the NCAA FBS in kickoff returns, averaging 36.33 yards per return. He also leads the BIG EAST in receiving yards per game (108.75) and ranks seventh nationally.
- Kicker Jake Rogers kicked a season-long 48-yard field goal to help lead UC to a 17-15 comeback win over Akron on Sept. 27.
- Quarterbacks Dustin Grutza (right fibula) and Tony Pike (left arm) are both out indefinitely after undergoing surgery on their injuries. Grutza was hurt at Oklahoma, while Pike was injured at Akron.
- Head coach Brian Kelly earned career win No. 150 against Miami (OH). His 151 victories rank 11th among active NCAA FBS head coaches and he is the active leader in the BIG EAST.
- UC and New Mexico State will be the last two teams in the nation to start conference play in 2008, both with games on Oct. 11.
