CHICAGO - Despite a 16-9 advantage in shots, the University of Cincinnati men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision at DePaul on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 11) at Wish Field.
The Bearcats (3-7-2, 1-5-1 BIG EAST) dropped their second consecutive 2-1 decision after falling to No. 8/7 Louisville on Oct. 7 at Gettler Stadium.
DePaul (5-4-3, 4-2-1 BIG EAST) scored a pair of first-half goals to take a 2-0 lead into intermission. In the 36th minute, Peter Sterbenz opened the scoring for DePaul with a shot from the top of the box after an assist from Steffen Vroom.
Minutes later, Vroom headed home an Erich Reichmann cross to pit DPU to a 2-0 lead at the 42-minute mark.
The Bearcats held a 10-5 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes of play, but were unable to dent the scoreboard.
In the second half, the Blue Demon defense, led by BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year Brian Visser, fell back to protect the lead.
Visser made eight saves to help DePaul run its unbeaten streak to four.
In the 89th minute, the Bearcats were awarded a penalty shot after a DePaul foul in the box. Senior Brad Simpson (Novi, Mich./Novi) stepped to the spot and put home his team-leading third goal of the season.
Matt Williams (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) made three saves, including two point-blank chances, but saw his record fall to 3-7-2 on the season.
The Bearcats return home on Wednesday, Oct. 15, for a 7 p.m. kickoff against non-conference foe Alabama A&M in Gettler Stadium.
